When I was in junior high school, I went out for the track team. I initially tried pole vaulting, but just didn’t have the fearlessness required to be any good at it. I also understand the skill and athleticism required to be a pole vaulter.
So, when I found this picture of 18-year old Allison Stokke, a senior at Newport Harbor in Orange County, CA., I was amazed.
In her first year of pole vaulting, Allison set the US ninth grader record by vaulting 12-08. Her personal best since then is 13-04 (the national HS girls record is 13-09).

Prior to becoming a vaulter, Allison was in gymnastics for 10 years.

Allison has commited to vault for UC Berkeley next year.

Look at the strength in that girl, both physically and mentally.
