What Does Memorial Day Mean to John Edwards?

Little more than a political-grandstanding opportunity, apparently.

Sen. Edwards — who never had the sack nor the integrity to serve himself — wants to co-opt Memorial Day parades to promote his political agenda, which is the antithesis of remembering and honoring better men than himself.

The Silk Pony wants everybody to take anti-war signs to the Memorial Day parades this year. Edwards and the Defeat-o-crats thinks that bringing our troops home in defeat — despite the overwhelming desire to stay the course by the troops themselves — is supporting them.

Supporting them is helping find a way to win the war on terror. Not finding the most politically expedient way to submit to it.

As a combat veteran who will be riding in a Memorial Day parade, I can tell you that nothing could be more inappropriate and unappreciated by troops and Veterans at Memorial Day parades than anti-war posters and protesters.

If you have a single honest bone in your body when you say that you support the troops, then you’ll leave your signs at home and just bring your sincere respect.

OTHERS:

Uncle Jimbo isn’t a fan of the Silk Pony, either:

Oh that’s special John, we as a nation set aside one day to recognize the ultimate sacrifice made by so many better men than you, and you feel free to push them aside so you can grab some spotlight. You miserable empty suit, you pathetic, girly man, you lying, cheating, petty, little narcissist. And don’t tell me to stop calling him names, he has earned a grand total of zero respect for anything he has done and earned trainloads of disgust for his shameful, disrespectful actions.

Amen to that, Uncle Jimbo (who did have the stones — he’s a retired Special Operations Master Sergeant).

Jack Army (a former U.S. Army recruiter who is now deployed to Iraq) has a suggestion on how you can really show your support on Memorial day.

Spree at Wake Up America:

A day meant to honor our fallen soldiers and John Edwards in an act of utter disrespect to our troops encourages, in fact, calls for.. a war protest.

If you’re still confused or or doubtful of how veterans and the troops really feel about holding a protest at Memorial Day parades, ask them:

Your feigned patriotism is criminally laughable. I am a “troop” and I find your ridiculous attempt to link true patriotic organizations to yours is indicative of a deep psychological malaise.

And…

Congratulations on your idea to turn a holiday tributing our veterans and military into a day of protest. Only the sickest, most vile of minds and cowardly of hearts could have come up with such a disgusting concept. God help me you’ll not win an election if it comes to THIS veteran voting for you. Go have yourself a nice little spa day, you don’t have the intestinal fortitude to run this country.

Read a few more of the letters and comments from the guy and girls over at the Gathering of Eagles forum.

After you’ve read a few dozen reactions, let me know if you still think holding a war protest at a Memorial Day parade is in the spirit of honoring war veterans.

  1. I didn’t think there was much more John Edwards could do to make me like him less, until this. He’s the worst of the Democratic candidates.

  2. Sen. Edwards — who never had the sack nor the integrity to serve himself. Kind of like Bush & Cheney but that is another story. As one opposed to Bush’s execution of the war in Iraq, not withstanding the point that he has failed to connect it to the war on terror, I agree Memorial Day is NOT the place for anti war demonstrations. Memorial Day is to be a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service and NOTHING should supercede that objective. I do support the troops but do not support and I will take only an American flag with me on Memorial day.

  3. John Edwards: Showing our Military How Much He Hat…

Following up on Saturdays Cross Post from Lew over at Right in a Left World, we see some reactions from our military veterans in response to Edwards disgusting act of calling for a war protest on the one day set aside to honor our military, Memorial …..

  4. Memorial Day is to honor the dead. Does it occur to any of you that perhaps those dead that are being honored would have preferred to live long and healthy lives?
That is precisely what Edwards is fighting for – so that in future Memorial Day celebrations there will be fewer dead twenty year olds who have given up their lives in this misbegotten war, to honor. All the pomp and circumstance will not give breath back to those who die in vain.

  5. Marcia — it is people like you who cheapen the lives and the sacrifices of these men and women by claiming that they died in vain.

  6. The Edwards campaign is starting to remind me of Phelps. What’s next? Demonstrating at the funerals of soldiers?

  7. Robbie – I cheapen nothing. If you don’t think that the young people dying in Iraq for a war that is deplored by the majority of Americans and leading Military leaders cheapens LIFE, then you must be living in some strange parallel universe. Of course, I honor all who have died – I just don’t want to see any more die for an obviously lost cause.

I suffer for the families of those who lost their loved ones in the last four years. All the Memorial Day celebrations will not ever ease the pain of their loss.

Oh, bullshit! You suffer nothing. And you and your ilk trying to politicize Memorial Day for your own cheap political goals, will only make the families only feel worse.

  9. I disagree with demonstrating at memorial day.

That being said, one line caught my eye “…a way to win the war on terror.”

Jesus Christ, WAKE UP. “The War on Terror” is a fucking meaningless catchphrase dreamed up by the Bush administration to try and frame the meaningless clusterfuck that is the Iraq War into some sort of noble, conventional war when it is ANYTHING BUT.

You CANNOT win a “War on Terror” or Terrorism or Terrorists, because there is NEVER going to be a day when we can say “whoo! alright EVERY SINGLE PERSON WHO EVER WANTED TO HARM THE UNITED STATES IS DEAD/IN PRISON/OTHERWISE TAKEN CARE OF.

Terrorists are not bound by religious, ethnic, or national boundaries. Their motives are based on ideas and ideologies, and those are things that will never die. If you think ANY country is capable of “winning” a war on terrorism you’re a fucking moron.

  10. I am a veteran & I’ll protest this Iraq Invasion every opportunity I have.

I do not want any more of our good soldiers dying in a war based on many lies.

Support our Troops! Bring them home from this insane war!
