My beloved Army turns 232 years-old today.

From the Army Birthday speech delivered by Secretary of the Army Pete Geren (a graduate of the University of Texas):

Our individual soldiers are what we call army strong. A Soldier who is mentally, physically and emotionally strong, is Army Strong. Its internal strength and perseverance. Just like the Army’s Warrior Ethos, the strength comes from saying, “I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. And I will never leave a fallen comrade.”

For 232 years now, soldiers have followed a warrior ethos and system of values central to all that we do. They symbolize the nobility of selfless service and sacrifice, and even loss of their very lives, by answering the call to duty and putting their boots on the ground wherever they are needed.

If only more of our Congressional leaders had served in the Army, and had learned the nobility of selfless service and sacrifice, and what it means to “never accept defeat; to never quit”.

President Bush gets it:

On behalf of a grateful Nation, I thank the members of the United States Army and Army veterans for protecting our citizens and laying a foundation of peace for generations to come. All of us who live in liberty live in your debt, and we will never forget your service and sacrifice.

I love that National Flag Day and the US Army’s Birthday are one and the same:

It’s a little known fact that flying the American Flag on June 14 also signifies respect for the U.S. Army. Though their emblematic shared birthdays may seem intentional, the date of their foundings is coincidental and years apart. The birth of the Army on June 14, 1775, came two full years before the Continental Congress adopted the first official flag of the republic on June 14, 1777.

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ARMY!!!

  2. No one knows the US Army birthday. The Marine Corps, that’s a different story.

  3. Yeah, I know.

Our VP of Marketing is a retired Marine (about 10% of our company are former Marines).

Every year on November 10, he brings in a large cake (replete with the Marine Corp crest made of icing) and a tape of the Battle Hymn of the Republic to be played while he cuts the first slice of cake with his saber.

  4. GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA FOREVER.

  5. Happy birthday. Thank you for what you did and do. my brother in the Army just got home from being ‘down range’ . folk like you had his six and got him home safe thank you.

  6. I retired in 2006, after 32 years of combined service. I went to my American Legion Post and hoisted a few for my Army, fallen comrades, and those who are still deployed. Happy Birthday, my beloved Army!

Since 14 June 1775, still the best!

    HOOAH!
