So what? It’s not like he drove a girl into a river and left her to drown
So a Republican Senator from Louisiana had sex with a prostitute sometime before 1999 (and before running for Senator).
Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) long ago admitted the mistake to his wife and family, and they have moved on. Kind of how Bill and Hillary moved on after each of Bill’s flings with women-not-named-Hillary.
But now there is a loud chorus of folks — both from the Left and the Right (but mostly the Left) — demanding that Sen. Vitters resigns from the Senate for something that he did before he became a Senator.
A few points:
- All this ruckus on the Left demanding that the Republican Senator from Louisiana resign, while the Democratic Congressman from the same state gets a free pass from the Left despite having a freezer full of cash bribes?
- Are those calling for Vitters to resign also demanding that Sen. Barrack Obama (D-IL) resign? After all, in his own biography he admits to snorting cocaine like it came from pixie stix and smoking marijuana like it was…well…marijuana. Even though these illegal and immoral actions occurred before he was a Senator, should he resign too? Or should just Sen. Vitter step down, since he’s a Republican?
- Should Sen. Ted Kennedy resign, since he killed a woman?
- Many on the left are chortling that this will hurt Rudy Giuliani, since Vitter is the Southern Regional Chair for Rudy’s campaign. Yet isn’t Los Angles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa wrapped up in a bit of an adultery scandal himself? And isn’t Villaraigosa a campaign co-chair for Hillary?
- Were the Liberal masses calling for the resignation of Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI) after he crashed his car while hopped up on drugs?
- You don’t have to have a pimp or exchange cash-for-sex to be a prostitute. Just look at Monica Lewinsky.
Should Sen. Vitter be criticized for running on a family-values platform though he liked some occasional pay-to-play sex with prostitutes? Sure. That’s fair.
Should Sen. Vitter be forced or coerced into resigning for something relatively minor (at least as far as political crimes go) as sex with a prostitute — an act that occurred years ago, and an act that he admitted to his wife and family? Absolutely not.
I think he handled the fallout better than the average bear.
I wonder who’s next…wouldn’t it be something if Senator Byrd’s phone number was on the list. Hell, he’d be applauded.
