Last August, Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) called the Haditha Marines “cold-blooded” murderers and condemned them as guilty without a trial or an investigation.

I called him a chicken-shit traitor to the Marine Corps and his country then, and I don’t think any better of him today.

Well, that investigation did occur. And today the Marine investigator recommends dropping all charges in the case:

SAN DIEGO — An investigating officer has recommended dismissing murder charges against a U.S. Marine accused in the slayings of three Iraqi men in a squad action that killed 24 civilians in the town of Haditha, according to a report.

The government’s theory that Lance Cpl. Justin L. Sharratt had executed the three men was “incredible” and relied on contradictory statements by Iraqis, Lt. Col. Paul Ware said in the report, released Tuesday by Sharratt’s defense attorneys.

“To believe the government version of facts is to disregard clear and convincing evidence to the contrary, and sets a dangerous precedent that, in my opinion, may encourage others to bear false witness against Marines as a tactic to erode public support of the Marine Corps and mission in Iraq,” Ware wrote.

Hopefully, right about now, Rep. Murtha is on a plane to personally and publicly apologize to LCpl Sharratt. And I hope that LCpl Sharrat refuses the apology and kicks Murtha square in the nuts as if he were a flaming terrorist.

The fine folks at Let Freedom Ring called Murtha’s office for a statement. They got a lot of spin but no comment.

I’ve posted a followup article on this emerging scandal. Be sure to check it out, too. The more time I spent on this today, the more facets I found. This ain’t gonna get pretty anytime soon for Rep. Murtha.

Watch Pelosi defend Murtha.

What about the Republican who made a similar charge?

“This was a small number of Marines who fired directly on civilians and killed them,” said Representative John Kline, a Minnesota Republican and former Marine who was briefed two weeks ago by Marine Corps officials. “This is going to be an ugly story.”
