Apologies for the lack of posting yesterday —

I was in the garage all afternoon and evening performing the 600 Mile Service on my motorcycle (new motorcycles have to be broken in, with an early service required) — which mostly entailed changing the oil and oil filter, changing the transfer case oil,  synchronizing the throttle bodies, and putting a wrench to all the bolts to ensure nothing has rattled loose in the first 600 miles.

  • The total cost of all supplies (new oil, new filter, and a couple of new tools): $36.
  • How much the dealership would have charged me (parts and labor) to perform the 600-mile service: $250
  • The peace of mind knowing that the job was done correctly and completely: priceless

I’ve read Robert M. Pirsig’s Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance twice, and I really do get a sense of Zen from working on my own bikes.

I’ll get back to regular blogging this afternoon.

  1. The intertubes were hopping yesterday.

  2. It’s about time you get back to blogging… I was bored yesterday and actually had to work!

  3. Is this something you have to do every 600 miles, or only the first 600?

  4. Just the first 600 miles.

Periodic maintenance will vary for different aspects of the bike’s life — but most maintenance occurs at 4000 and 8000 miles intervals.

Oil, I’ll change the synthetic oil about every 4000 miles. Transfer case oil every 8000, spark plugs about 9000-10000 miles.
