I have zero love for the pit bull (and related/similar) breeds. I’ve written about my dislike of the breed and their typical owners here, here, here, and here.
But not even on my worst day would I wish the kind of inhumane treatment or executions that Vick and his thug friends are engaged in.
The thought of it turns my stomach into knots.
Because men capable of doing this to an animal — to any animal — are capable of the worst kinds of hate and the worst kinds of indifference to their victims.
And as others have already noted, underground dog fighting is relegated for the most part to a very specific sub-culture. And that specific sub-culture is very much black, rap, and gangster.
And dog fighting is never the only crime being committed by these groups. Find yourself a dog fight (ask Clinton Portis where to find one — he says he knows where plenty of them are) — I bet you you’ll find guns, drugs, and other assorted crimes being committed.
In a report I watched last night on Hannity and Colmes, a law enforcement officer said that of a very large number of men arrested for dog fighting (some 300+), more than 75% of them had previously been arrested on drug charges.
This is a very criminal and very dangerous culture of people.

Dogfighters in the U.S are predominantly white. Mostly working class, but some are quite wealthy, Some are professionals, and believe it or not , some are even law enforcement.
Dogfighting has been around for centuries, and was sanctioned by the United Kennel Club not that long ago. Google, “dogfight busts”, and you’ll see that the criminal case of Floyd Boudreaux, the “Godfather” of modern day dogfighting going to trial next month.

These dogs do not come this way, they have to be tortured. My female pit was thrown in the ring to teach males how to kill. Because she is part whippet, they couldn’t catch her (we think) so the ringleaders decided she might make a good fighting dog. Apparently, even after severe abuse she wouldn’t “turn,” so they tied her to the bumper of a car and tried to drive her back legs off. She limped out from somebody’s house, right rear leg open to the bone, and left rear leg looking like a chainsaw had gone thru it. At first the vet was going to have her put down, but then he said she would have to be amputated. We prayed for two days, then went back to the vet with heavy hearts. She had miraculously begun healing, (which still makes me cry, telling about it 5 years later.) $1000 in medical bills later, she is totally healed, and even became so socialized into our family that we got her to actually lie on the floor next to our free ranging house rabbits and hang out. Eventually she even took to grooming them, and was so gentle they actually would put up with it!!
According to all you pit haters out there, most of whom have never actually met a real pit bull in your entire lives, my dog should have bitten my head off. Instead she is a great example of how little these dogs want to be put in these situations, and how quickly they turn into love-you-forever couch potatoes given the chance to be rehabilitated by patient, informed animal loving rescuers. A pitbull crossed with anything is not considered a fighting dog in the first place. Second, pitdogs are usually quite sociable with humans. In fact man aggression is discouraged by most professional dogfighters.
The people who stole your dog apparently weren’t dogfighters. Dogfighters generally cull dogs that quite in the midst of a fight, because he’s not useful for their purpose. There’s usually no animosity , and the culling’s quick and painless.

Pit bulls have bad reputations due to their sadistic owners that torture and abuse them to turn them into fighters. So..not only are these sick individuals physically harming the dog, they are harming the entire breed.
I volunteered in New Orleans at an animal shelter after Katrina. I handled numerous pitbulls there, some who had obviously been abused. Not ONE of these dogs were agressive towards me, nor towards any of the animals there.
