Witnesses: Gunman slain by HPD wasn’t threat
Let’s see — he (Reginald Sumbler) had a gun, which he was using to “keep police at bay” — was “not a threat.”
Maybe not in your neighborhood*, but in my neighborhood “guy with gun who’s defying police” is a threat. And the sooner they shoot him, the sooner I’ll feel better about walking my dog through the neighborhood.
I guess we should wait until the man actually shoots an officer (or a neighborhood child) before we consider him a “threat”…

* I used to work about 2 miles from this neighborhood just west of Hobby Airport in Houston. It’s a modest neighborhood in what could best be described as a risky part of town.
Lived close to UH many years ago and even then it was no place to take too much time to asess a threat, with a gun in his hand…not damned likley.
They tried for an hour with this man. But whether its for an hour or 30 seconds, once you point a gun at the police they will shoot. The man even got a shot off at the cops but luckily none of them were hurt.
Whoever wrote this article is a fucking asshole with no fucking heart. The dude was going to kill himself which is why he had a gun in the first place. If your dumbass would have seen the footage of the crime scene, you will CLEARLY see that he did NOT aim the gun at anyone only held it and he was on some drug substance so the police should have taken that into consideration. And the fact that this same type of situation happened a week ago, leaves me no room to side with HPD. They should have learned from the first killing of a black man for no reason a week ago. Had he been white with a gun and on drugs, he would still be alive today! Point blank, so don’t sugar coat it like oh he shouldn’t have had a gun, you’re right he shouldn’t have, but if he’s not aiming at anyone why should he be dead. Many people have guns, should SWAT kill them too? And he couldn’t have shot an officer even if he wanted to because he was so fucking far away with that little ass pistol he had. Whoever wrote this article, I wish one of your family members gets depressed and decides that they want to kill themselves and has a gun in their hand and you call HPD thinking they can help stop this person from going through with these actions, but instead they slain him, I wonder how cold hearted you will be then. I wonder if you would be on HPD’s side then. You see a black man automatically think he’s in the wrong. Did you know that me and him went to all prestigious “white” schools, for instance Lovett elementary? He wasn’t a bad kid or a gang banger that so many people think black men are just because they wear baggy shorts and a white t-shirt. He was a well educated man and through some difficulties in his life he became depressed and felt that he had to resort to suicide, being that we are in America, you would think that HPD would have helped him NOT kill himself instead of finishing the job for him. Reginld even had a bible in his hand so he must have some good in him and probably could have been saved had HPD done their job correctly. I hope that maybe some people will open their naive ass eyes and see that Reginald could have been anyone, and if HPD doesn’t choose better alternatives to handling situations such as this, then alot more blacks will continue to be killed at the hands of the police! Think twice before you judge the next black man based on what neighborhood he lives in. I came from the same neighborhood and now I attend a prestigious white university and I proudly have a 3.7 gpa, so where you come from means nothing, it’s all about where you’re going!

What “white university” would that be? Grambling? Texas Southern? Alcorn State?
Oh, wait, those are officially designated “black universities”. There is no such thing as a “white university”.
And why not? Because if there was, the right-Rev. Al Sharpton and the race-baiting Jesse Jackson would have teamed up the NAACP to scream about how racists it is.
But “black universities”? No problemo.

Here’s a bit of advice for you, if — as an obviously smart black man attending a prestigious white university — don’t want to get shot by police:
Don’t stand out on your front porch waving a gun. And if you do, when the police show up and tell you to drop the gun and get on your face — well, drop the fucking gun and get on your face. Immediately. Not an hour and a half later.
You might be a smart kid, but you’re also a race-card apologist, you thinks that no black man can actually be in the wrong when he’s pitted against a white man (especially “The Man”).
The police were called after he fired a shot inside his house. He may have been depressed but it also appears that he had no problem putting other people at risk. That he may have been on drugs makes him more dangerous.
If the police just wanted to shoot black men, they would have shot him when they arrived on the scene instead of talking to him for an hour in an attempt to get him to put the gun down. Evidently he did but grabbed it again and pointed it at the officers. Then he was shot and dropped his gun. He still managed to find it and fire a shot and was then shot and killed by the police.
Just because someone is depressed doesn’t give them the right to attempt to shoot police officers or risk the lives of innocent bystanders.
His family was aware he was suicidal but they did nothing. And what does this guy leave behind? A two year old illegitimate child.
Why did the family not hide or demand he give them the gun when they first learned he was suicidal? Why didn’t they take him to get psych help earlier when they knew he was having suicidal thoughts?
Boy, you need a wake up call, son.
If the guy has a gun, does not listen to police commands and . . .
Damn, I just can’t go on with this post. It’s pointless. A guy like that just doesn’t get it.
I’ll leave him as chum for the rest of you.
