The Texas Senatorial primary season is well underway, and Texas Democrats are desperate to win a state-wide office for the first time since 1990.
Democrats think that Sen. John Cornyn’s seat is particularly vulnerable.
Two front runners have emerged for the Democrats: Texas State Rep. Rick Noriega (who is also a Lt. Colonel in the Army National Guard) and personal injury trial lawyer Mikal Watts.
A little more about Mr. Watts, and why I think Rep. Noriega will win the primary (but lose to Sen. Cornyn in the general election):
He believes, like most Texans, that there is a lack of real leadership and accountability in Washington and that it’s time for a change and he is committed to fighting for Texans so they will have opportunities and hope for the future.
Personally, I’d rather have my Reps “fighting for Texas”, while our Senators fight for our country. And when I hear rhetoric like “fighting for Texans so they will have opportunities”, I hear “bringing home pork”.
But what I think of Mr. Watts isn’t really the point. And it’s not why he won’t win the primary. Here’s what some far left players in the progressive party think of Mr. Watts:
Matt Stoller from MyDD:
The second half of the video probably is the silliest, most transparent attempt to deliver a message I have ever seen.
From PDiddie (take that for what it’s worth), a commentor at MyDD:
He’s donated five-figure sums to Republicans Dewhurst and Abbott, considers homosexuality a “lifestyle choice”, and like you said is anti-choice.
The last thing we need in Texas is to replace John Cornyn with Joe Lieberman (or worse). Watts as the nominee would be a disaster for Texas Democrats, who can ill afford any more wipeouts at the statewide level.
From a South Texas Democrat, VictoriaCat:
I was left with less of a feeling of partnership or collaboration and more of a feeling of…being given a very nice roast beef lunch by a friendly, wealthy man who was selling something I could not yet fully identify.
__________
There’s also this:
Mikal Watts’ Fiction:
“The second aspect of Watts’ success is his ability to pick the right cases. He says he’s selective about the cases he takes, turning down 10 potential plaintiffs for every one he agrees to represent. Watts avoids cases that involve alcohol or unbelted occupants.†(Inside Counsel, 12/1/05)
Mikal Watts’ Fact:
He made his bones making arguments like the aforementioned, suing automakers and other businesses. But suffice to say, he won’t be bragging on the campaign trail about the “marijuana mistrial” or his lawsuit blaming Ford for an accident in which the driver was speeding, had been drinking and wasn’t wearing a seat belt.
The automaker was at fault because, according to Watts, it didn’t laminate its side windows.†(The Southeast Texas Record, 8/4/07)
Trial Lawyer Mikal Watts cannot even be true to himself when cash is involved. How can Texans trust him?
(answer: they can’t)

Why will Noriega win?
Lack of substance (evidentiary support) makes for a weak argument that “Noriega will win” the Primary. The comments were taken from the far left and it is questionable whether these Extreme Progressives qualify as Democrats or not.
Nothing supporting that he will lose to Junior John in the General election.
Clearly, Junior John is afraid of Mikal and would rather square off in the General election with the perceived lesser threat.
