Some of you might have noticed that I placed a new Nike+ running profile widget in my sidebar.
I had both of my knees repaired by the VA hospital in Houston (ACL reconstructive surgery on each knee) back in 1997 and 1998. I haven’t run since then. But I’m I’m trying to get fitter and lose some weight by making healthy (and hopefully permanent) life style changes.
I’d like to start running again. I was good at it and really enjoyed it back when I was in the Army.
Being the gadget geek that I am, I went out and bought the new 3rd generation (G3) iPod Nano (read a review from CrunchGear) and the Nike+ Sport Kit to help me track my progress and to give me something to listen to while I’m running.
From the Playlist Mag review:
…it does provide plenty of motivation, enabling you to enjoy your tunes, receive audio feedback with the press of a button, be part of a community, and see how well you’re doing—both against yourself and against others. When Lance Armstrong or Paula Radcliffe told me, through my nano, “Congratulations! You’ve just run your fastest mile,†I felt like they were talking directly to me—even though I knew they weren’t. The Nike + iPod Sport Kit is simple but ingenious, easy enough to use for beginning runners and technophobes alike, while reliable enough for even competitive runners.
So far, I’m exceptionally impressed and happy with the Nano and Nike+.
One of the features I like best is the ability to join Virtual Races and Challenges with other Nike+ users around the world. So far I’ve entered two challenges (a 20+ mile per month challenge and a Longhorn vs. Aggies 54 Day Challenge), and then chart my progress everytime I update my run data.
________
It’ll take me a little time to get my endurance and stamina (and speed) back up — but I’m looking forward to it. As you can see from the sidebar widget, I’m just getting started, I’ve run 4.79 miles so far this week at an average pace of 11.49/mile. A far cry from the sub 6-minute miles I could run when I was a younger man in the Army.
So far I’ve lost 36 lbs since starting my new fitness program, and would like to lose about 37 more lbs. The running should get me there a lot quicker.
Anyway, now you can keep up with my progress, rib me for being slower than your mother, and cajole me into getting out and running more…

Running?
Sorry dude, you’re on your own.
I haven’t been chased in a very long time, and haven’t had to chase anyone, either, and I’ve never had any knee trouble.
The treadmill is boring enough, for me.
