Hot Wastes of Time reminds us that it’s deer rutting season here in Central Texas:
The rut is in full swing for the Austin whitetail deer population, and nowhere is it more evident than in West Lake Hills. In the last week I’ve seen an 8 point buck in my front flowerbed, menacing me (and the puppy) through the front door window. Earlier today we saw a blonde woman jogging down the street, closely followed by a loping 6 pointer. I wonder just what sort of ‘tail’ he thought he was chasing. I wonder if she knew she was being menaced by a horny ungulate.
Be careful out there. The stupid lovesick bucks will cross roads in the middle of the day if they think they’re gonna get some. They’re especially dumb this time of year and somewhat territorial.
She doesn’t have to remind me. It was exactly 2 years ago today that I hit one of those stupid ungulates while I was riding my motorcycle.

Maybe you should stick to your bicycle for the season.
I’ll do my part in reducing the numbers of love crazed deer this season. Bow season is already in full swing, rifle season is only days away.

Ouch, dang! If only they would let us bow hunt in the city. Glad you weren’t more seriously hurt.
In the eleven years I lived in Austin, I never once saw a deer. The migration of deer into the burbs seems to have occurred since the nineties. With all those tasty flower beds in the newer developments, and a growing deer population, it’s small wonder.
Wish I could help, but I have a deer management program planned for East Texas.
