Dems Pass Shield Law that Doesn’t Shield Most Bloggers

Leftards blame GOP

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the House Democrats have just passed the Free Flow of Information Act, a “shield law” that protects journalists.

I thought I’d be covered by these laws. After all, I have a degree in Professional Writing (thus I’m a proper’ educated writer). I make a living as a writer (albeit not as a journalist).

And I do augment my day job salary with a bit of income derived from my blogging hobby.

But Pelosi and her Democratic swamp-dwelling cronies have decided that I don’t qualify as a journalist worthy of protection:

The bill provides journalists with a qualified privilege as to sources and information, while at the same time, recognizing the need for effective law enforcement and robust national security. A blogger who regularly engages in journalistic activities – such as gathering and publishing news and information for dissemination to the public – and does so for a substantial portion of the person’s livelihood or for substantial financial gain would be covered by the shield as a journalist.

If I’d known the standard for protection was going to be predicated on earning a more “substantial” income from my blog, I would have focused on that…sheesh.

Of course, as they knee-jerk-action do with everything, the Lefties are blaming Republicans. From the very first comment* at the Daily Kos:

Is this their way of shutting down citizen reporters?

With the Internet, Republicans will never be in power again. The Republicans and beltway martini guzzlers need to devise a plan to take information spreading across the Internet out of politics and reality.

Is this their way?

Hey, Mensa — your party passed this stupid law. Not mine.

  1. There are several views on this, you may want to review what this political columnist from Congo says about the shield law:

I do not agree with the law and I do hope Bush does Vetos it.

  2. Right, because who cares about the citizens having any idea about what their government is doing?
