Crooked lawyer (allegedly crooked, anyway) Mikal Watts has withdrawn from the Democratic race to replace Sen. John Cornyn here in Texas:
AUSTIN — San Antonio lawyer Mikal Watts today said he will not seek the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate because of the toll his effort already has taken on his family.
Watts had been primed to face state Rep. Rick Noriega of Houston in the battle for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican U.S. Sen. John Cornyn.
This is good news for not just Democrats (as it will allow Noriega to save his money and resources fighting Sen. Cornyn rather than in beating the heavily-financed Watts), but is good news for all Texans.
Though I don’t care a whole lot for his politics, I have a great deal of respect for Rep. Noriega (who is also a Lt. Colonel in the Army National Guard). If a Democrat is positioned to defeat Cornyn (doubtful here in Texas), Rep. Noriega is a decent and honest man — we could certainly do worse.
