I Feel Awake Louise

Trish Murphy

My favorite musician, cooking school instructor, young women’s mentor, and all around creative person is Austin’s own Trish Murphy.

I’ve been following her career (literally, as we both moved from Houston to Austin around the same time) since sometime in the early to mid 90’s, and have probably seen her perform live over 50 times.

From one of her hit songs from Girls Get in Free is titled Thelma and Louise (listen to clips here):

So if you love her, treat her kindly.
That’s what it’s all about.
My sweetheart wasn’t sweet to me
And look how I turned out.

So fellas take your hats off
Say “thank you, ma’am” and “please”
Because her name might be Thelma,
And mine might be Louise

Anyhow, I’ve always been as amused by Trish’s writing as I have been about her singing.

And now she’s teamed up with writer Melanie Wells and started their own blog (I Feel Awake Louise) about the perils of the creative life.

The writing is exceptional and entertaining, and Trish (Thelma) shares some interesting and too-familiar themes and stories about growing up poor in rural Texas.
