Another day, another “family pet” gone bad…

KILLEEN — An 11-year-old boy has died after being bitten on the neck by his family’s pit bull, police said.

The Killeen Police Department said the dog jumped from the couch at Seth Lovitt when the boy was running through his home with his little brother Tuesday evening. The dog knocked Seth to the ground and bit him.

Seth’s grandmother and mother restrained the dog and called 911.

Seth was pronounced dead about two hours later at Darnall Army Medical Center, police said.

The dog has been quarantined.

And I’m sure — right up until the moment that dog killed their son — the owners of that dog have probably repeated the old “He’s a really good dog. He wouldn’t hurt anybody. It’s not the breed, it’s how they’re raised” lies a thousand times.

Bottom line — these are dangerous breeds. Exceptionally dangerous breeds. Just because they haven’t attacked you or a member of your family yet, doesn’t mean you should feel safe.

People who have children should never own pit bulls. If you do, and that dog ends up killing or maiming your child, then you should be brought up on felony child endangerment charges.

Yes…if I were the National Pet Czar I would criminalize the ownership of pit bulls.

I’m fully with you on this one Robbie. Dogs are animals by nature, and as such, they are amoral. They will act only in their own immediate interest, which ultimately makes them a danger to humans. Some breeds are inherently worse than others, pit bulls being a prime example.

I love a good dog, but I absolutely hate this breed. They weren’t bred to be a companion, but to kill.
I can’t imagine the grief that poor family is feeling.

Nazar, once again you decry all dogs. All dogs are not a danger to humans. And, as far as “amoral”, morality is a human trait. Animals, none of them, have morals. That is not to say they cannot love or do not have feelings, but they don’t have a set of principles, per se. Besides that, it is a ridiculous comment to make, because even among humans, morality is subjective.

And I don’t think anyone with children should have a dangerous breed of dogs.

Hello Dianne!

First off, I think you meant that I said dogs were immoral-knowing a clear set of moral rules, but disobeying them anyway.

I said dogs are amoral-having no morals, which we both agree on anyway it would seem.

I couldn’t disagree with you more when you say “that all dogs are not a danger to humans.” Dogs by nature are aggressive, some more so than others. Also, if you look to past history, you will see that dogs have been domesticated for only a short period of time, about 10,000 years. How much do you think could have really changed in that time period? Some breeds are worse than others, but any way you cut it, dogs are a nuisance to society at best and a mortal danger to it at worst.

Well I have to disagree with all of you. It is your ignorance that is speaking. Like people, not everyone is the same and we do have lots of different kinds of criminals in this world but does that say something about all of us? NO. This is a very dangerous breed and if you decide to own a pitbull, you should do lots of research before owning one. This breed is known to please their owners…and if that is attacking or fighting another dog or being a protector to its owner than that is what it is going to do. Male pitbulls especially need extra care if they are not fixed. They are Alpha dogs and think that they are in charge and need the specialized training in order to be a good dog in society. It is just like someone from the service who comes home after serving and they need to go through this process of reality to the world again so that they can function in the world and they just dont start killing a bunch of people. Because of this breeds background, they automatically need this specail attention and training because it is in their blood. I can guarantee you that this dog was probably a male and that the kids were fighting and this family dog was protective over the 9 year old brother and felt that he was at harm. This is not an excuse but I bet this is the dog’s reasoning behing his actions. It is a very unfortunate situation and very heartbreaking but you can not single out this breed like that. Do some more research on the breed before you start talking down on it!

Our neighborhood has been terrorized for several years by two pitbulls who live on our street. Each time they escape their home or backyard, they go after anyone who is out in the neighborhood. We have a lot of young children on our street, and the parents are terrified. So far, the owner has always been able to immediately get to the dogs before they actually are able to attack. It will only take one time of the owner being a few seconds too slow to possibly cost the life of one of the kids in our neighborhood. Every time it happens, the head of the household says that they are really sweet dogs who would never hurt anyone. It isn’t fair for everyone else in the neighborhood to have to live in fear. I never walk out of my door without looking around to be sure that those dogs are not out.

So sorry to hear about this tragic accident, such a terrible loss for the family.
They will be in our prayers now and always.
Not looking to point fingers or what ifs….just thinking about their loss and not wanting to make it worse then it already is.

Bless them and may they be able to find some comfort…..

First of all, I would like to know do ANY of you have ANY experience with pit bulls? Do or have you ever owned one? Read up on the breed? Have a friend that knows someone who might have one? Anything?? It sounds to me like you are not very knowledgeable about this breed. They were NOT breed to fight until just recently. They WERE however breed to be FAMILY dogs!!
I do agree with “Jen” to single out pit bulls as “Bad Guys” is just wrong. For example if I were to say, statistics show that 90% of death row inmates are black, does that mean that all blacks at some point in their lives will kill someone? I don’t thinks so!!! Basicly that is what you are saying. That just because SOME pits have attacked, that ALL of them will. What about the lady who had to have her whole face reconstucted because she was attacked by her dog, which if I remember right was a golden retriever or a lab or something like that. Read up on the breed. They are good dogs. They just need a good home and lots of love, just like any other dog. Give them a chance, just like you would want from everyone around you, if statisicly speaking you were a “Bad Guys” just because of how you look or your skin color!

Will peopl ever get the point. That it is how th edog is raised is how it will react. Like honestly if you haven’t even met or come into some sort of contact how can you say wether or not they are vicious? I can’t believe yo still don’t get the pont. Maybe someday hpefully soon you will understand what it means when someone say’s Punish the Deed, Not the Breed. What if the breed of dog you have is banned or said to be vicious won’t you hope that everyone will get the point that your dog is not vicious?

I have a pit he is almost 6 months I have to agree with what people say its how they are raised. When I first got him he was a month old. I did my homework. Then are dogs that need a lot of love and care. They are very active dogs and they need to be brought outside and around other people. You can’t expect and dog to be locked up all day and take it out and expect it to know how to act around other people. Then also very protective. I have 5 kids I teach my children to be carefully how you play around and with him. I do agree that you should not have a dog that goes around biting people. That person should be accountable for there dogs actions. Pitbulls are not the only dogs that turn on there owners. My heart goes out to this family.

Got something you want to say?
