Is anybody surprised by this:
MEXICO CITY – The question of whether to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants ignited a national debate in the United States. But in Mexico, the largest source of U.S. immigrants, there’s no question: Here, you must be a legal resident to get a driver’s license.
Mexico treats it’s own illegal immigrants pretty damned harshly.Yet they think their illegal immigrants to the US should be treated with red carpets, free-everything, and equal rights to American citizens.
“The fact that all 31 states in Mexico would have such a common-sense position . . . shows to me a certain hypocrisy on the part of the Mexican government, because they are constantly criticizing those of us in Congress who want immigration laws to be tougher up here,” said King of New York [ U.S. Rep. Peter King (R-NY)]

This criticism is analagous to the critique the US suffered from the Soviet Union during the Cold War when they attempted to point out the hypocrisy of American laws with regard to, for instance, segregation of African Americans.
I’m sure there were Americans of the time who pointed out the USSR’s own human rights flaws as a defense for the status quo. Luckily our country instead chose not to only meet the low bar of human rights offered by authoritarian nations and chose to become a more democratic, egalitarian nation itself.
In other words- if Mexico has such great laws, conservatives might consider living there.
We have great laws here too, if our lawmakers gave a shit about enforcing them. The tide is changing tho. Both Repubs and Demo ordinary citizens are upset with the attitude of our lawmakers. And, as for Mexico, their Presidents whine and cry over how their lawbreaking citizens are treated here in our country when they laugh in our faces with their laws. Sorry, I’m not living there, Preston, and that’s an absurd statement to make.

So what are you saying, Preston, that we can’t criticize others for their hypocrisy because we’re not perfect?
And that still doesn’t change the point Robbie made. The Mexican government treats its own illegal immigrants barbarically, yet they expect us to provide our illegal immigrants with all kinds of amenities and privileges.
My point is only: What difference does it to US immgration policy how the Mexican government treats anyone? Just as I would say that the fact that al Qaeda tortures its prisoners should have no bearing on the way that we treat our prisoners: We are are the United States of America- we shouldn’t hold ourselves to these lesser standards.
The hypocrisy is that conservatives in this country would like to emulate the policies of the Mexican government while simultaneously declaring our superiority to it.

Conservitives do not want to emulate the policies of Mexico, we want our OWN laws enforced. Plain and simple. “Declaring our superiority” is a trick you leftist try using to discredit our position; like crying racist. Your tactics are old and tired. The way things are going, one might consider immigrating to Mexico, then crossing into the U.S. illegally. You could have all of the protection of stricter laws and tougher punishment in your home country, and all of the bennies of this one, while being cheered on, and free legal assistance from the home country.
First of all, no serious mainstream conservative wants to shoot illegal immigrants from Mexico. Secondly, it’s interesting you should bring up the analogy to al-qaida. The fact that Al-Qaeda tortures its prisoners should have a huge impact on our strategy against them. As they use asymetric warfare and torture tactics, we should find ways to combat that, and torture is probably one of those ways. Sometimes we have to compromise our standards in order to defeat the enemy. Same thing with illegal immigration. We may have to compromise our ideas of kindness and compassion in order to deal with the problem.

First Preston equating the terrible way we treated blacks 50 years ago to illegal aliens in this country is the most classically absurd logic and it is designed to illicit guilt on Americas part and make us all feel bad..Hey people, this is a classic liberal tactic. And the funny thing is this has nothing to do with race. It is about ILLEGAL aliens flooding into this country.
The two arguments have nothing to do with each other. One has to do with how we treated black “Americans” horribly, the other is about people that are NOT Americans and have no right to be here but yet want everything you and I have….Completely different issues. Please answer me this: what are we as 300 million people if we have no border, common history, language??? Are we just a bunch of balkanized people sharing a plot of land? Is that the kind of country you want to live in? Ever hear of Yugoslavia, they tried that…it does not work. And yeah most of the illegals are from the south, wow surprise.! But Hey liberals, I hate the break the news to ya but do you think once Hispanics are the vast majority with their people in power, do you think they will show your white European heritage the same courtesy you bend over backwards to show them?? Do you actually think you will be shown the same courtesy?? You are a true fool if you think that will happen.
All traces of our European past will be marginalized, you will be made to feel guilty about everything in our past. Even thanksgiving is a hateful holiday because the Indians shared their food with use and we stole their land…Folks that is something I heard just the other day. So yeah we should be doing the same as mexico, and much much more. I say no more anchor babies, and arrest anyone who hires a person who cannot prove they have the right to work here. I believe the VAST majority of Americans are waking up to this critical issue. The very fabric of this country is being ripped apart by the fact that we not longer expect anything from these people.
They don’t have to learn english, they want DL license but don’t have car insurance, they want to vote, free health care, free education, and even friggin in state college tuition.!! Just how stupid are our leaders.?? I say complete, sell-out, traitors. So yeah giving them drivers license is stupid no matter what mexico does. I could care less what they do. Mexico could give Americans flowers and candy when we vacation there, and I would still say NO drivers license to ILLEGALS…I don’t care where you come from.
If you are not here legally, we don’t want you here. Come here legally, get in line, take the citizenship test, take the pledge, learn english, meld into the culture, learn our ways don’t make us learn yours…hello. Then I am completely COOL with it and will welcome you with TOTAL open arms. Don’t do it this way, then I will never respect that choice.
Something for free means nothing to the person who gets it..But work for something, sweat for it, and it means so much more. That is a simple lesson for a child, we should expect no less from people who want to be in our country.
