More on Jeanne Assam — this deserves a post of its own…
Blackfive tips us to this quote in the Denver Post from a Vietnam Vet:
Larry Bourbonnais, a combat-tested Vietnam veteran, said it was the bravest thing he’s ever seen.
Bourbonnais, who was among those shot by a gunman Sunday at New Life Church, watched as a security guard, a woman later identified as Jeanne Assam, calmly returned fire and killed the shooter.
“She just started walking toward the gunman firing the whole way,†said Bourbonnais, who was shot in the arm. “She was just yelling ‘Surrender,’ walking and shooting the whole time.â€
I am in absolute awe of this woman. Again…some most people run or cower from danger. Other people walk straight towards it.
I’ve always believed that most people fall into one of three categories: wolves, sheep, and sheepdogs. Assam is without a doubt a sheepdog.
President Bush should stop whatever he is doing right now and go award this woman the Presidential Citizens Medal — the second highest medal that can be awarded to a civilian.
Established on November 13, 1969, The Presidential Citizens Medal may be granted to any United States citizen “who [has] performed exemplary deeds or services for his or her country or fellow citizens”.
I’d say she performed an exemplary deed for her fellow citizens. And then some.

I agree, she should receive that award PDQ.
I’m also a devotee of the Sheep, Wolves, and Sheepdog analogy.
Once again, it took a person with a gun, to stop a madman with a gun. Thank God she was there when needed.
