On December 21, 1970, Elvis Presley met with President Richard Nixon to discuss the war on drugs.

7-years later, Elvis was found dead at his Graceland home.

Years-and-years of drug abuse contributed to The King’s death.

It reminds me of so many of today’s hypocritical celebrities who are the extreme poster children of “Do as we say, but not as we do.”

Well yeah, Elvis was a hypocrite because he met with Nixon to tell him how evil the Beatles were and was named an honorary DEA agent…and then found dead on the toilet pumped full of drugs.

But I have to say if you’re looking at a celebrity to be a role model, then you’re kind of a dumbass. I don’t recall any rappers or rock stars volunteering to raise anybody’s children, so mommy and daddy should shut the fuck up and watch what their kids buy.

John — I agree wholeheartedly with you.

However, a lot of outspoken celebs these days put themselves out front on many issues that they have no more credibility or expertise in than a pile of rocks.

Hell, on a recent list of “Most Influential Democrats”, it seems that half of them were actors, directors, comedians, or musicians.

Nobody gives up their right to have an opinion just because they put out an album. If American culture is so f-ed up that people care what movie stars and musicians have to say that’s their problem. (But, of course, extreme antipathy to Susan Sarandon’s opinion is just as guilty of this as looking to her for her guidance on the issues of the day)

I get a little tired of celebs shooting their mouths off about the politics of the day, but then I remember that they’ve got just as much of a right to do it as anybody else in this country, so I swallow my irritation.

On a somewhat related note, I recently posed a hypothetical question to my roommates and girlfriend: if you could punch any living celebrity in the face, who would it be? The front-runners were Tom Cruise, Paris Hilton and Bono.

I had to, much as it turned my stomach, step in and defend Bono. Yeah, the guy is a pretentious ass-clown who hasn’t put out a good record in years and years…but he DID make some really great music at one time, and much as his “rock star out to save the world” jesus complex may annoy me, I have to admit that he tries very very hard to leave the world a little better than he found it, and that’s more than most PEOPLE (much less rock stars) do.

Tom Cruise is batshit insane and hasn’t made a good flick in years, but he was involved in some great projects back in the day.

But Paris Hilton? C’mon, how can she not be at the top of every person’s celebrity-punch list? She is a cancer on society.

It is certainly bizarre to me that self-involved princesses can get less criticism than people who are attempting to better the world.

Got something you want to say?
