Chris Jessee: Austin’s Own Steve Bartman

Wow. If you did not watch the Holiday Bowl last night between the University of Texas and a way-over-ranked Arizona State team, then you missed one really bizarre play.

What you probably can’t tell from that picture, is that the kid reaching for the ball is about a yard on the field. And that football is still in play on a live play.

Even more bizarre is that the kid, Chris Jessee, is Texas Head Coach Mack Brown’s step-son.

Thankfully Jessee’s boneheaded play didn’t have a role in the final outcome, as Texas easily manhandled ASU 52-34. But it’s illustrative of one of Mack Brown’s biggest weaknesses as a head coach — he’s a “loyalty guy” to a fault.

There is absolutely no reason why Mack Brown’s step-son should have been on the field — other than daddy just wanting to give his son a good view of the game from field level. But Mack’s loyal to his friends and family, so he puts his kids on the field.

Where they don’t belong.

Kind of like with his best friend forever, Offensive Coordinator Greg Davis — who should have been fired a long, long time ago. But Mack’s “loyal” to Greg Davis, and will never fire him, regardless of how shitty of an OC he is.

As a life long OU Sooner fan, as long as Mack can’t figure out how to beat the Sooners, I like him coaching UT just fine.

That was Cleve Bryant, he’s the assistant AD for for Football Operations at UT.

The taunting of the UT defense by the ASU QB, in the week before the game, is an important lesson to all trash talkers.
As the Ol’Coach, Gene Stallings used to say, “the less you say before a game, the less you have to take back after the game.”

Oh, and Jarzemsky, since no one else has mentioned it, I’m a little taken aback by your use of that term, which is considered highly offensive to a segment of our population, which you have voiced much support for. Or maybe I misunderstood your comment as an attempt to be insulting.
