Where in the World

My wife and I are at the airport this morning on your way to visit my brother and his brood at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina (Columbia), where my brother is an instructor at the US Army recruiting school.

We’ll be here for a week — flying back on Christmas day.

Looking forward to playing some disc golf with my brother and my nephews, relaxing, and doing very little blogging.

UPDATE:

We’re here.

Pretty uneventful day of travel — which is good. Flew Delta from Austin to Cincinnati, where we had a brief lay-over in what reminded us of many third-world airports we’ve visited. Then an easy flight to Charolette, NC. My brother made the 80-mile drive to pick us up.

We could have flown directly into Columbia — for an additional $400.

We’re staying with my brother on post at Ft. Jackson — in what has to be some of the worst post housing I’ve ever seen. Had this been a hotel, my wife and I would not have checked in.

My brother said that when they moved in, their paperwork included a warning about the “possibility” of lead paint…

Our Soldiers and their families definitely deserve much, much better than this.

To be fair to Ft. Jackson and the US Army, these housing units are in the process of being renovated, and newer more modern units are being built elsewhere on post.

  3. Thanks Preston and Dianne.

Yeah, my brother and his wife hate Columbia. They have nothing but very bad things to say about the city.

My brother says it’s the worst place he has ever lived. When I asked him if that included Mogadishu, Somalia he said “Yes”.

  4. When I tell people I lived in SC they think of Charleston and perk up a little. I have to bring them down by saying I didn’t live by the ocean, and I didn’t live in the mountains, I lived in a swamp. Oh well, I guess three years there made me strong enough to tolerate anyplace.

But it’s astonishing that a college town doesn’t have more going for it.
