Bob Phillips, the Texas Country Reporter, does some of my favorite “local color” reporting. And this piece (it’s a bit old, but I hadn’t seen it until today) is one of my favorite “Texas” stories ever:

I’ve long opined that the very best people I have ever known came from Texas — and the best of them were from small town Texas.
If you ever have doubts about the future of the our country, about whose hands we are leaving it in — go visit small town Texas and meet their kids. Listen to them say “Yes sir” and “No ma’am” when spoken to.
If you ever start believing that patriotism is dead in this country, go visit small town Texas. I’ve ridden in a lot of Patriot Guard Riders funerals around the state, and I’m always most blown away by the unapologetic and overwhelming displays of patriotism in small town Texas.
If you want to be reminded of the genuine goodness of people — visit small town Texas.
This video made me exceptionally proud to be a Texan today.
Bob Phillips has done some outstanding work, over the years, but this ranks right up there with his best. Good find.
Robbie, you and I are both from small town Texas, though Spade is certainly smaller than our respective hometowns. In all of my travels, and all the major cities I have lived in and visited, my heart is always in my hometown, and the surrounding smaller towns around it. Just good and decent people.
