From the Belmont Club, on the Arab world’s embrace of Sen. Barack Obama:
There are two ironies here. The first is that while Barack Obama has gone out of his way to say that he is ‘not a Muslim’, in a wider sense the Muslims have taken him into their bosom. An acquaintance, writing from Jakarta says the same feeling is pretty strong over there too. While in America he projects the image of rallying America he simultaneously conveys the impression of being on the side of the Arab too.
The other irony of course is that the Arab attraction for Obama is potentially at odds with the Arab desire for a powerful America which can contain Iran. So far Obama has managed the remarkable feat of being all things to all men, even men who are mortally opposed to each other. What happens when he has to come down on one side or the other?
Glenn Reynolds thinks that “someone will be disappointed.” I have an uneasy feeling that it won’t be the Arabs left feeling quite as disappointed as the rest of us.
This does fly in the face of my “Obama is an apostate” theory…but the alternative is even more troubling…

Holy shit, you mean it’s possible to look out for the interests of two ethnic groups? Sweet merciful christ!
[Editor --- The interests of the Islamic world and the interests of Western culture are not compatible. Westerners and Muslims simply do not agree on the basics of social order and don’t want to live under the same rules.
The Arab world is "interested" in the annihilation of Israel. The Arab world is "interested" in imposing Sharia law. Everywhere. The Arab world is "interested" in using people with Downs Syndrome as human bombs.
Frankly, I'm not interested in finding common ground with any of these "interests".]
