The abuse of codeine-laced cough syrup is so prevalent in Houston that the city has been nicknamed “The City of Syrup”.
Houston rappers and syrup have gone together ever since DJ Screw introduced the technique of slowing down the basic tracks of a cut when he remixed it.
This process is called “screwing” a song. Slowing down the song was supposed to recreate the effect of recreationally using Promethazine with Codeine also known as “lean” or “purple drank” in Houston slang.
Not surprisingly, DJ Screw died of a codeine overdose. So sad.
But DJ Screw would be proud that his legacy has lived on. And now another Houston rapper, Pimp C, who rapped about and glamorized using the drug “recreationally” is dead.
And guess what he died from?
That’s right. An overdose of prescription-strength cough syrup.
In addition to the half-empty bottle of syrup found in the dead rappers hotel room, authorities also found bottle of acyclovir, which is often used to treat herpes.
Pimp C, born Chad Butler, was sentenced to eight years in prison on January 28, 2002 for failing to complete a community service requirement stemming from an aggravated assault charge.
