Barack — The One We’ve Been Waiting For?

Bill Kristol at the NY Times:

Barack Obama is an awfully talented politician. But could the American people, by November, decide that for all his impressive qualities, Obama tends too much toward the preening self-regard of Bill Clinton, the patronizing elitism of Al Gore and the haughty liberalism of John Kerry?

It’s fitting that the alternative to Obama will be John McCain. He makes no grand claim to fix our souls. He doesn’t think he’s the one everyone has been waiting for. He’s more proud of his country than of himself. And his patriotism has consisted of deeds more challenging than “speaking out on issues.”

I’d say that sounds about right.

  1. Um… Krugman has been tough on Obama but confusing him with William Kristol seems to be a stretch.

  2. I think this is about all that needs to be said about Bill Kristol’s contribution to American political dialog today:

    Yes, yes, and yes! I’d say that insinuations of preening self-regard, patronizing elitism, and haughty liberalism are almost certain to be the heavy lifters in the Republican attack toolbox this fall. Unless, of course, Hillary Clinton wins the nomination, in which case they’ll attack her preening self-regard, patronizing elitism, haughty liberalism, and grating shrillness. Who says conservativism is out of new ideas?

    does drum even realize that the ? had nothing to do with republican “attack tools”, and everything to do with what the “…American people, by November, decide…”? well i agree mr. drum; yes, yes, and yes,
