My wife and I were in Smithville, Tx today to pay our respects to PFC Tina Priest, who was killed in Iraq two years ago (on March 1, 2006).

While we were in this quite little town of 3901 people on the banks of the Colorado River, we stopped to see the house where the Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. movie Hope Floats was filmed:

A couple of weeks ago, we gave our old refrigerator away via Austin Freecycle.

The girl who came to pick it up turned out to be a production assistant on a new movie that just started filming in Smithville (The Tree of Life, with Brad Pitt and Sean Penn). So, we knew that filming had started in Smithville.

The house where Pitt and Penn are filming in Smithville is just around the corner from the Hope Floats house:

Pretty soon, Smithville is going to have a Hollywood-like tour of homes.

We didn’t see Brad or Sean, as there didn’t appear to be any shooting going on at the time.

We talked to a neighbor down the street who was wearing a Harley Davidson t-shirt. She said that Brad’s been scooting around town on his custom Harley Davidson when he’s not shooting.

Next week is the Thunder on the Colorado biker rally in Smithville. Maybe we’ll see Brad there…

Sounds like y’all had a nice day of riding. I always liked riding through Smithville, on my way to Houston from Austin. Pretty little town, and it seems I had some good Bar-B-Que there.

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one bbq joint in Smithville — Zimmerhanzel’s Bar-B-Que, and it was closed when we rode through.

There were lots of Zimmerhanzel’s buried in the city cemetery.

We stopped at Cartwright’s BBQ in Bastrop on the way home instead.

The brisket was well cooked and just fatty enough. Needed a little more salt though. The hot link we had was mild, greasy, but pretty damned good too.

They were out of beans, and the homemade hot sauce on the tables was one of the worst I’ve ever had. It tasted more like pickle juice than hot sauce.

Very pretty houses. I bet that one in the round is really cool inside. Haven’t seen the movie but I’m going to check it out. What a fun day you had.

Got something you want to say?
