Sexual shenanigans aren’t just the milieu of Republicans…we simply catch more shit and harsher retribution for it.
For every Mark Foley who sent improper emails to a teenage (but of legal age) page, there’s a Gerry Studds who’s actually having sex with those teenage pages.
For every Larry Craig trolling for free sex in a bathroom stall, there’s an Eliot Spitzer paying the professionals for it:
Gov. Eliot Spitzer has informed his most senior administration officials that he had been involved in a prostitution ring, an administration official said this morning.
[snip]
Mr. Spitzer, a first term Democrat who pledged to bring ethics reform an end the often seamy ways of Albany, is married with three children.
[snip]
An affidavit filed in federal court in Manhattan in connection with that case lists six conversations between the man, identified as Client 9, and a booking agent for the Emperors Club.
When Republicans are caught with their pants down, so to speak, they are usually run out of office by their fellow conservatives. The Democrats usually make excuses for them, but let them keep their job.
Rumor has it that Spitzer is going to resign over this flap. The man broke the law. And the public trust. He should step down. But look at Gerry Studs. Look at Teddy Kennedy. Look at Patrick Kennedy. Look at William Jefferson. Look at President Bill Clinton (You don’t have to have a pimp or exchange cash-for-sex to be involved a prostitute. Just look at Monica Lewinsky.)
Obviously you can be guilty-as-shit of some pretty serious stuff and still keep your job as a Democrat. It’s only the Republicans who are expected to resign.

More on the Emperor’s Club:
The ring was known as the Emperor’s Club VIP and offered 50 prostitutes in New York, Paris, Washington, Miami and London, The New York Times reported.
The appointments, made through an online booking service, cost between $1076 and $5921 an hour.
Wow. Who says we’re in a recession? Per hour? Really? I’ve met some fantastic women in my life. But not a single one of them was nearly $6k/hour fantastic.
Does being governor of NY really pay that well? John Edwards was right after all — there are two Americas: The one where rich Democrats diddle young ladies (who aren’t their wifes) for $6K/hour, and the rest of us who can’t/won’t.
_____
In the early pictures of his televised “apology”, his wife is standing beside him. Which makes her an idiot. Maybe she’s angeling to be a NY Senator…I don’t know. Worked for Hillary though.

My wife would be so far gone. With all of my stuff. No way she’s standing there humiliated for my illegal infidelity. I’m not sure which she’d be most pissed about — that I cheated, or that I spent nearly $6K/hour to do it. Either way, she’d be gone. Long gone. I can’t imagine being married to a woman who would put up with that shit. No way would I marry a woman so weak and void of self-respect and self-worth that she’d put up with that.

It’s not fair to say that Democrats somehow survive sex scandals while Republicans are forced to resign. The Spitzer situation is
akin to that of David Vitter, who was humiliated but did not resign
and is still going strong in the Senate. For that matter, Larry Craig
is still in the Senate. In my home state of New Jersey, McGreevey
was in fact forced to resign for his scandal. My own libertarian view
is that prostitution should be legal and that I don’t care what consenting adults do with each other. And for the record, I’m going
to vote for McCain in November.
