I haven’t listened to the Dixie Chicks in long, long time. Ever since they went abroad to criticize our country, in fact.
I’ve never listened to their song “Not Ready to Make Nice”, but I’ve read the lyrics (today for the first time). The song is their way of not backing down from their criticism of the war or of our President, despite the negative impact it’s had on their careers. They sing:
- I’m not ready to make nice
- I’m not ready to back down
- I’m still mad as hell and I don’t have time to go ’round and ’round and ’round
- It’s too late to make it right
- I probably wouldn’t if I could
- ‘Cause I’m mad as hell
- Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should
Allahpundit at HotAir has posted a Marine’s response (in song) to the Dixie Chicks. Click the image to listen to Marine Cpl. David Thibodeaux’s song, “I’m not Ready to End the Fight”:
This is awesome — gave me slight goose bumps listening to it. Good music can do that. Especially when he sings their chorus back to them:
Forgive, I should
Forget, bet you wish I wouldYou say, time heals everything
So just keep waitingYou’re through, no doubt
But your too blind to figure it out
There is, a price
And I’ll keep payin’I’m not ready to end the fight
I’m not ready to back down
I’ve been through hell
And I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to turn back now
You know I wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m proud as hell
I can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I shouldYou once, walked
On the yellow brick roadBut now you stumble on jagged stones
And I kind of like itIn your bed you sob like a baby
So full of regret as you lye there prayin’
And it’s a sad, sad story that a mother didn’t teach her
Daughter to respect those who protect her
And now you know how the words that you say
Can send so many over the edge
That hearts fill up with hate and anger
As you dream of a way to make it better
You can’t make it betterI’m not ready to end the fight
I’m not ready to back down
I’ve been through hell
And I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to turn back now
You know I wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m proud as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I shouldI’m not ready to end the fight
I’m not ready to back down
I’ve been through hell
And I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to turn back now
You know I wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m proud as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I shouldForgive, no chance
Forget, not till my last breath
You say, time heals everything
But I’m not waiting
From his MySpace page, Cpl Thibodeaux writes:
A fellow Marine and I wrote, and I recorded a song titled “Not Ready To End The Fight.” This song was inspired by the fact that I, like many Americans, don’t particularly appreciate the underlying message behind the Dixie Chicks’ song “Not Ready To Make Nice.” While I did like the underlying music from song, the lyrics’ just didn’t sit well with me, many of my colleagues and other Americans.

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m not ready to buy your CDs
I’m not ready to patronize your sponsors
I won’t buy a magazine with your photo on the cover
When I hear you, I switch the station
Just remember, chickies, we’re just not into you.
