UPDATE — Sigh. Oh well. The folks of District 14 have cast their ballots, and they want to keep Rep. Ron Paul around for a few another term, winning nearly 70% of the vote.

_______

Though I don’t live in District 14 and can’t vote, I have endorsed Republican Chris Peden in this race and hope that if you live in District 14, you will consider him, too.

This is Rep. Ron Paul’s district. While Rep. Paul has been running for President, his hometown constituents have been seeing a side of Rep. Paul that they never knew. And they’re not happy.

Peden, 36, is challenging Paul for the seat in the 14th Congressional District, which runs down the Gulf Coast almost from Port Arthur to Port Aransas.

Paul was first elected to the seat in 1976. He skipped a term in 1978-79, but he’s held the office ever since. It’s time for a change to an actual conservative Republican. Not a Libertarian who votes with the GOP a bottom-of-the-barrel 74% of the time.

  1. Screw you. Ron Paul is a REAL conservative!!!!

[Editor --- You make a compelling argument. I can't believe your candidate is losing with such eloquent supporters.]

  2. Ron Paul is a real conservative.

Government- Limited, constitutional government. He does not what the federal government legislating morality like the neo-conservatives and religious right push for. The idea is to keep government as small as possible and out of one’s life. This is a conservative idea going back to Thomas Jefferson.

Foreign Policy- Limited, constitutional policy. He wants the President to declare war before initiating a war. He recognizes that a congressional order against threats not tied to a state is fine as long as the target is specific, like pirates or Al-qaeda. The President cannot then use this order to expand the scope and begin a war without a declaration. This keeps the government from going to war without checks and balances. Neo-conservatives approve of war to spread democracy and open up markets over seas. His foreign policy is a conservative idea that goes all the way back to Thomas Jefferson.

Economy- Constitutional policy. He wants to back our currency with more than just our word as under the fiat system. Instead a return to a gold and silver standard puts real, stable worth behind the dollar. A conservative value that goes back to Thomas Jefferson.

Spending- Responsible. He wants not only tax-cuts but spending cuts. Neo-conservatives favor tax-cuts but allow deficits as long as growth is fostered. Paul wants a sound, responsible approach to spending. Again, a conservative value that goes back to Thomas Jefferson.

It is very obvious that Paul is a true conservative. The neo-conservatives have redefined the platform of the Republican party and distorted what is conservative. All of Paul’s policies exercise restriction or restraint on the federal government. A conservative value that goes back to Thomas Jefferson. If you do not believe me about neo-conservatives read Irving Kristol’s book “Reflections of a Neoconservative: Looking Back, Looking Ahead” or check out the Wikipedia article that sums up the five major points of neo-conservative philosophy. One might find that neo-conservatism is not conservatism and realize that Ron Paul is the only conservative on the Republican stage.

  3. I had never even heard of Paul, until the first Republican debate, whenever that was, and I have lived in Texas most of my life.
I hope to never hear of him again after this year. While some of his ideas seem conservative, the totality of his vision is that of one that appears to be on hallucinogens.

  4. I wish we had a congressman that wasn’t a lawyer representing us here in southern California. Lawyers don’t actually produce anything but are sure a drain on our ability to stay ahead of the technology race.
This Chris Peden, is he a lawyer?
    Enough said.

  5. Apparently, less than 30% are unhappy with Ron Paul. His opponent is committed to space exploration, NAFTA, and an unaffordable foreign policy. While I disagree with Ron Paul’s stance on immediate withdrawal from Iraq, his stance on spending is not only smart, but based on the constitution. We need to quit paying Western Europe’s defense bill- ever wonder why the prospered the past four decades? I am sick of Republicans who pander to socialists and walk all over our constitution! 70% of the 14th district voted against earmarks, an inefficient tax system, and errant spending. I can’t believe you would vote for a man who would compare space exploration to the exploration of the frontier! How many natural resources can we gain from the moon? How many factories can we build on the moon? Give me a break! We have plenty of problems on earth: forget space and forget liberal republicans.
