I’m a big fan of Google maps. Not so much for finding directions to and from places unknown, but more for the ability to create and save your own custom maps.

Like this map I’ve created of BBQ joints in Texas (though I much prefer this one built by Community Walk, that allows users to add comments to each map point).
But now there is a whole slew of user created plug-ins and add-ons that you can use to make some really cool custom maps.

For instance, I used GPS way points to map out the starting location, break points, lunch stops, and finish line for this weekend’s MS 150 bike ride (click here for my map). I then used the Path Profiler plug-in to create these cool elevation change charts for the ride.

Here’s the Day 1 route (click on image for larger version):

Here’s Day 2:

MS 150 Day 2 elevation changes

And here’s the complete route:

Yeah. I know. I’m a complete dork about this kind of stuff.

Do you know if I can use this nifty gadget on non-road trails in Moab?

Cause, that would be sweet.

It will work between any GPS points that you feed into it.

On the BBQ list - you need to add Carl’s bbq - on 290 right near Telge.

happy riding!

Got something you want to say?
