Selwyn DavisIn 2006, Selwyn Davis, 26, went on a litle crime spree here in Austin.

  • Davis started off by beating up his girlfriend , Linda Martinez, fracturing her eye socket and jaw, slicing her leg, pouring rubbing alcohol over her head, and threatening to set her of fire.
  • He then went to his uncle’s house and stabbed him with a knife, stealing his aunt’s purse, and stealing their car.
  • He then went on a drug binge, returning to his girlfriend’s apartment where he sexually assaulted a teenage girl in the apartment.
  • Finally, he went to his girlfriend’s mother’s apartment (Regina Lara, 57) ,and stabbed her to death.

Selwyn Davis was convicted of capital murder and sentenced to death.

Remarkably, Selwyn has waived all appeals and asked to be executed as quickly as possible:

Sentenced to die for the 2006 killing of his girlfriend’s mother, Selwyn P. Davis told a judge in Travis County on Friday that he wants to waive most of his appeals because he is guilty and he doesn’t want to spend his life in prison.

“I’m certain of what I want,” Davis told state District Judge Julie Kocurek. “The quality of life is not, basically, to my standards, you know what I am saying? Basically, jail sucks.”

I’m glad to hear that death row sucks. It should. It should suck the life out of these guys.

But this story also illustrates something that is horribly wrong with the justice system here in Texas — the fact that Davis will be on Death Row, at considerable tax-payer expense — for at least another 2 years.

2 years. Why?

  • He’s guilty. There is no doubt about it. Ask him.
  • He’s been deemed to be mentally capable of understanding what he’s asking for.
  • He wants to die as quickly as possible. He doesn’t want any appeals to be filed on his behalf.
  • The people of Texas want him to die as quickly as possible.

I really just don’t understand why this can’t be accomplished in, oh, say…the next 3-4 weeks. There’s one last mandatory automatic appeal to Texas’ highest criminal court. Fine. I don’t know how that process could take more than a couple of days, since there is nothing to argue in favor of not executing him.

But instead, the people of Texas will have to pay to incarcerate and feed this piece of shit for another 2 years. Which is just ridiculous.

In the Good Ol’Days, this trash would have been taken out quickly. When Leon Czolgosz assassinated President McKinley, he was executed in the electric chair 45 days after McKinley died.
In this guy’s case, maybe his agony is prolonged, by not giving him what he wants.

Who’s the guy dressed like a Longhorn?

Got something you want to say?
