Carl Hunter

Carl Hunter of the New Orleans suburb of Metairie personifies what it means to be a real man.

The 73-year old Hunter is the owner of a small construction company in Louisiana — most of America’s best success stories are about men just like Hunter who learned a trade, then parlayed it into their own small businesses.

About 4 months ago, Hunter won the largest Powerball Lottery in the history of Louisiana — $97 million. He took a one-time lump sum payment of $33.9 million (after taxes).

And why did Mr. Hunter wait 4 months to collect his winnings? Well, he still had responsibilities and obligations to his customers, his business, and his employees:

Asked why he waited so long to turn in the winning ticket, Hunter said he wanted to wrap up some of his construction work and finish his outstanding contracts. In fact, Hunter’s wife Dianne said he was still at work this week.

“I don’t think about buying elaborate cars or homes,” Carl Hunter said.

I’d bet you dimes to nickels this guy votes Republican.

Do you really think of every event as Democrats v. Republicans?

Aside from the fact that the guy is a middle-aged, Southern white guy I don’t see why anything else suggests he is a Republican.

Sounds like a Republican to me, also.

I didn’t realize the tax on that was so high……he was left with just 33.9 million after tax on 97 million ?

I know there’s also a state income tax in LA, unlike TX, but Damn…..he lost almost 2/3 of it.

Heh heh….not that I’d really complain about getting 33.9 Mil.

[Editor --- No. He took the lump sum option vs. the annual payment option. If you choose the lump sum option you only get half of the total amount --- minus taxes. So he got $48.5 million before taxes.]

Well, I suppose there is a certain similarity in the poor financial choices inherent in both playing the lottery and Republican budgetary policy.

Okay so let me get this straight, You have a problem with the fact,This gentleman Waited 4 months to cash in HIS ticket because he wanted to finish the work he agreed to do???? I hope this man is a Republican But most of all i am proud he is an american Because he did what he said he would do he finished his job before he started on some kind of new life i say kudo’s to him

You misread my post — I have no problem at all with him waiting four months to cash his ticket. Rather I was extolling his virtue for doing so.

Hummm, i didn’t know he waited that long to cash the ticket. I mean, it was very cool of him to follow thru and finish the work he promised he would do……But, couldn’t he have still done the work with the lottery $$$ sitting in his bank??

LOL, I know thats what I would have done!!! I dont see how money in the bank means he’s not allowed to work…..but to each his own I guess. Good for him…

I wish it were me, the lucky bastard! ; )

Sorry, its me again……2 quick questions:

I know that Carl took the one time lump sum cash payment. But, if he would have chose the 30 installment payment option…..how long does that last??? He would get all his winnings, just divided into 30 payments? Is that…….ONE payment a yr for 30 years? Or is it every 6 months? Every month? I’ve always been curious.

AND……how long does it take for them to get a person their money after they claim it? I see that Carl claimed his on May 8th. Would he have actually got his money in a timely manner? Or did he have to wait till June or something to even see it? You know how it is……when you owe a company money….it’s, “Pay it to me NOW or else!!!” But when they owe Y-O-U money……they always sleep on it for “10-14 Business Days”…….*rolling eyes*

But anyways….always been curious bout the lottery thing……

Got something you want to say?
