Mark Tapscott thinks that it’s time for the GOP to start acting like conservatives and not just merely paying it lip service:
The only thing that can save the GOP are concrete actions that may persuade sufficient numbers of voters that this time, the Republicans will actually do what they say they will do if they are returned to the majority in Congress. The GOP “brand” is so damaged that there is no guarantee that doing these things will get Republicans back in control of the levers of congressional power.
Here are those “concrete” actions:
- Terminate earmarks
- Seek term limits
- Start entitlement reform
- No more taxes
- Stop the spending
- Enforce these pledges
I would love to see my party fight for each and every one of those things.
Sadly, my favorite Senator, John Cornyn (R-TX) doesn’t even seem to get it, having just voted for the Food and Energy Security Act of 2007, H.R. 2419, more popularly known as the “Farm Bill” — which is nothing more than a big ol’ bucket of pork at tax payer expense.
It’s exactly the kind of bill that I expect my Senator to vote against.
From Lone Star Times:
What is particularly galling is his line about families struggling with food costs benefiting from a bill that pays large agribusinesses to turn food into fuel! What nerve this guy has. If you are going to stick it to your base, at least let them choose the method!

These are the types of pledges the GOP makes when they’re not in power. When they are in charge they are more than happy to use the money moving through Washington to enrich their supporters and entrench their power.
As it happens, I think that their corruption was an effective means of retaining power. It was simply washed away by dissatisfaction with the war.
