Earlier this month, two pitbulls attacked and killed a 7-year old boy in Abilene, TX.
Over the Memorial Day holiday, another pitbull attacked two people at a city park here in Austin, and was eventually shot by a police officer.
And now the attacks have hit even closer to home…
___________
In case I didn’t have enough reason to hate pitbulls…
Yesterday evening, my wife was at Auditorium Shores dog park with Otis (Lab/Bloodhound) and Angus (Great Dane) — Auditorium Shores is one of 12 leash free dog parks in the city of Austin.
Our dogs were playing near the edge of the water, when out of nowhere a big black pitbull came running full speed from across the park at Otis, slammed him to the ground and immediately grabbed him by the neck.
I wasn’t there or I would have shot the dog dead. And then I probably would have ended up in jail for beating the dog’s owner half to death.
Anyway — Shannon was yelling at the pitbull and yelling for the dog’s owner to come help her. Angus came over to try to protect his pack, and the pitbull turned and bit him on the shoulder. And then grabbed Otis by the neck again.
Shannon was trying to pull the pitbull off of Otis when the owner finally showed up; he pushed her aside to grab his dog.
And that’s when Angus took a bite out of the kid’s back (he was a college-age kid) while trying to protect his pack from the pitbull’s attacking pack.
When the dogs were finally separated, the kid said he was sorry — he said, “I don’t know what got into my dog. He already attacked another dog out here earlier today.”
When my wife called and told me that I nearly went ballistic — if his pitbull had already attacked another dog at the dog park that afternoon, what the hell was he still doing there letting his dog run free without a leash?
______
My wife didn’t call the police, worried that they would have taken Angus and quarantined him, too, for biting that kid (which they would have), even though our dog was only protecting his pack when that kid pushed Shannon out of the way.
NOTE to idiot pitbull owners: DO NOT TAKE YOUR DANGEROUS DOGS TO LEASH FREE DOG PARKS.
I’m going to go to write every member of our City Council and ask City Council to consider an ordinance banning pitbulls from being off leash anywhere at anytime in the city (other than when on private property).
Then I’ll probably go to a City Council meeting sometime next week and try to speak to our city council and ask them to do the same.

Good God I can hardly believe it happened to your dogs, of all dogs, after these pit bull stories you’ve been writing. Shannon is lucky she wasn’t malled. Well, if it were me, I would be straightforward with the Council, telling them everything that happened. As far as I’m concerned, Angus was only protecting both Shannon and Otis and is a hero and any reasonable thinking person would agree !!!! And, if you can take others with y0u who have experienced problems with pit bulls, the better it will be. You might even call the press and tell them you are going … you know how to play the political game…use it
