That story is not true . I live here in austin tx and I watched the news. The dog was wrongly shot , it was tied to a tree and had not even barked at the officer. The chronicle even did a story about how many pit bulls are murdered each year by cops for no reason. The way the first person posted that story is incorrect!!!

Ellen has said it all. Thanks for reading my mind :-) I really hope this incident is further investigated, sounds a bit too cut and dry to be the whole truth. There are many people out there who have no clue how to read dog behavior and I wouldn't be surprised if some trigger happy idiot just misread a dog's playful intentions.

I'd really like to hear the whole story; too bad this blog has nothing new but conjecture, rumor, and innuendo. The owner has stated (at least to Fox 7) that the dog was on leash but excited when shot. I haven't seen a definitive statement in a news report that anyone was bitten.

I'll even go so far as to say that the owner left me with the impression that he may have actually been a pretty good owner.

There are no bad dogs only bad owners...... those who are irresponsible. All dogs must be socialized and have to learn "manners". I own 2 pits, my dogs are never allowed to roam, they were taught when they were pups where their boundries are. All dogs should be leashed when in a public place. Bad behaviors are not allowed, no barking, no jumping, no peeing and pooping in the house, no chewing up of furniture or other personal items, no cat chasing, no garbage snitching...... Obediance classes are wonderful places to socialize and teach manners. An unsocilaized animal is a risk to everyone.... if a dog is fearful.... it's gonna bite.

I would never leave my dogs alone with children, they were not raised with children in the house and children can be rambunctious to say the least... which makes the dogs nervous, so everyones safety they are crated.

The time has come, this breed must be vanquished to the pages of genetic mistake history.

BSL.... sucks

Ellen has already said it all. I should not even justify this post with a response. Responsible owners of pit bulls know them to be one of the sweetest and most loyal breeds around. In fact, in our training class, our pit bull was called the sweetest dog in the class. This class includes a lab and a beagle. A well-trained dog is a well-trained dog no matter the breed.

Pit bull stereotypes are just as harmful as any other stereotype in this world that we all live in and share.

The owner is probably buying another pit bull pup from a street vendor or in a WalMart parking lot. The pup will be "guaranteed" to come from a fine bloodline.

Owning a pit bull is like playing with a loaded gun. Except of course,
"my" pit bull is the sweetest dog on earth and would never attack anyone.

I used to think Pit Bulls were unfairly demonized, until I came across this page at the Pit Bull Rescue site.
I know now, I would Never own a Pit Bull.....but this explains a lot about temperment and behavior:
Scroll down to :
"Breed's Original Purpose"
&
"Never Trust a Pit Bull Not To Fight"

http://www.pbrc.net/breedinfo.html

Re: the incident at the Austin park.....I have to wonder if the owner(s) were negligent in training their Pit Bull properly and, as a result had an out of control dog, figuring if they got him in trouble in public....he would end up as someone else's problem.
Probably not true...Just a theory I have.

That Pit Bull Rescue site also warns to never take a PB to a dog park....or out in public unless on a leash....that they should never be allowed to run free in public.

as one of the idiot pitbull owners of the world, let me say that only an idiot would say that. like people, pitbulls and all other creatures there are exceptions to every rule. i know several people who own pits who are wonderful loving dogs. like children,if you raise a pit to be well behaved and loving they will act as such. sad enough though, because of their reputation only the ignorant and problem humans of the world are the ones who own them. that is why the shelters are full of them, people dont take time to care for thier animal properly, and just dont want to act responsible i.e not keeping their dog on a leash. and there are several stories of other dog breeds dogs biting people and attacking other animals, but they dont make headlines because they dont have the reputation of pits. like with our children weve stopped discipling them properly and placing the blame on any one but the true responsible parties (parents or in this case owners) so i do agree with you half heartedly, but you of all people should be able to relate, i mean how many biker stereotypes do you know about.
