But he thinks you (and your kids) should. Or is it French that we’re supposed to learn?

Either way, it looks like just one more thing for which Barry is embarrassed about his country.

You know, I don’t understand when people are going around worrying about, “We need to have English- only.” They want to pass a law, “We want English-only.”

Now, I agree that immigrants should learn English. I agree with that. But understand this. Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish. You should be thinking about, how can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.

You know, it’s embarrassing when Europeans come over here, they all speak English, they speak French, they speak German. And then we go over to Europe, and all we can say [is], “Merci beaucoup.” Right?

You know, no, I’m serious about this. We should understand that our young people, if you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get ajob. You are so much more employable. You can be part of international business. So we should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age, because children will actually learn a foreign language easier when they’re 5, or 6, or 7 than when they’re 46, like me.

Barry really believes that it’s more important for us to learn Spanish than it is for immigrants to learn English? Seriously?

I wonder if Barry knows the word for “pander” en Espanol?

As to Barry’s belief that most immigrants will learn English — well, that simply hasn’t been my experience here in Texas. I encounter numerous adult hispanics every single day that do not know a lick of English.

Oh, and in case you were wondering if Barry speaks Spanish — like he thinks the rest of us should — he doesn’t. Or any other language for that matter. And yet, he seems to have faired pretty well in life despite not knowing anything other than English.

Just another example of do as I say and not as I do — or legislation for thee but not for me.

He does know a little Arabic, with a first-rate accent, though.

God forbid someone suggest we better our children by teaching them skills at an early age.

Did you intentionally misread this?

is not the same as

it’s more important for us to learn Spanish than it is for immigrants to learn English?

As a progressive I come to this website to get a sampling of the concerns of conservatives. I have to say that in recent months the information has become less reliable and the tone more shrill (as they used to say). I, for one, found the arguments more persuasive before the Obama derangement began.

Public schools in the U.S. have been teaching foreign languages to kids since before Obama was born. I guess Obama doesn’t realize this since he attended prestigious private schools most of his life and so do his kids. And, then, he has the guts to say he is embarrassed by “us” for our lack of linguistic skills?

I can tell you one thing Obama didn’t learn in school - RESPECT !

It’s one thing to encourage students to learn new languages, most of us do. Just his leftists view that there is something else about this country he doesn’t like, that embarrasses him, is the same view of the window to his soul, that says he not only doesn’t love this country, but he is ashamed of it.
To which I say, right back atcha’, B-HO.
Say, isn’t it your turn to make the adhan for salat at your local mosque this afternoon?

Well, personally I never met anyone from Texas who didn’t speak some Spanish. I might also mention that when I recently called my local (Chicago) Sofitel (a French hotel chain), they answered in French and English. A couple of weeks ago I stopped at a supermarket that caters to the Mexican market and where most of the signs are in Spanish. When I checked out, the magazine racks were full of books on how to speak English, and the checker took a quick look at me and spoke in perfect English. Why is Mr. Obama so embarassed? Any possible problem seems to be taking care of itself quite nicely without government interference.

When I was in college, two years of a language were mandatory. I hated it. Didn’t learn a thing. Years later when it wasn’t mandatory and I wanted to learn a language of my choice (not one everyone told me I had to learn, i.e., spanish), I took five years of Italian and French.

Got something you want to say?
