The Next VP of the United States, Sarah PalinEnough people (and not just Red State this time) are reporting that McCain has selected Alaska Gov. Sara Palin to be his VP pick

Smart. Very smart.

I feel better about my Party today than I have in quite some time. And not just because Gov. Palin is kinda hot.

Palin is the first woman governor of Alaska, elected in 2006. She was also the youngest ever elected at the age of 42. She is the mother of five children, the youngest of whom was born in April and has Down’s Syndrome. She ran on a clean government platform in ’06 to defeat the incumbent Republican Governor Frank Murkowski.

Palin is a social conservative who is strongly opposed to abortion and same sex marriage. In addition, she is pro-gun and wildly popular in Alaska.

The most timely updates and breaking news — not surprisingly — is coming from Twitter. Where Emily Zanotti seems please by the pick:

OMGSARAHPALINOMGWFTSARAHPALINOMG!!!! WOOOOOOOT!!!

And Patrick Ruffini, “McCain wins battle of the veep selections.” Yep. By a landslide.

Lagomorph13, “Women make up 54% of the electorate. Prepare for the arc of the womens’ vote to curve right, ladies. Fox is calling them Sarah Palin Moms!”

David Almacy, “It’s official! http://www.mccainpalin.com/

Emily Zanottie follows up aby asking, “How long before the first “Sarah Palin is not a real woman” post?”. Heh…I’ll bet Amanda Marcott and Jane Hamsher are nearly done with their first drafts now…

Madison McGraw (Girl Arsonist) — “For the first time in my life I won’t be voting democrat. After watching Sarah Palin’s speech, my mind is made up.” Look for a lot more of that in the days, weeks, and months to come.

One of my favorite responses so far, from David at The Corner:

She is everything Obama is not. A real reformer who took on her own party’s corrupt establishment and won, defeating an incumbent governor, 80-20. Don’t forget that she’s also a mother who chose life for her Down Syndrome baby — we can probably guess where she’d fall on the Born-Alive act.  If this is the future of the GOP, they’re in good shape.

Michelle Malkin (who, as usual has a fantastic round up post): “And Hillary must be experiencing a schadenfreude-licious moment right now.”

  1. Well, if it’s Not Romney or Pawlenty, I say YOU GO GIRL !

  2. Great choice, and a wonderful lady!

  3. It’s an insult to women to imply they will vote for someone only because she is a woman. If McCain wants to choose a woman, then why not choose someone who could be president? Kay Bailey Hutchison is infinitely more qualified.

[Editor --- I hear you, Kbrown. You would think it would be insulting to imply that black people would vote for Obama only because he's black. And yet with more than 90% of the black vote going to Obama, that is exactly what is happening. Why should something approaching much less than 50% of women voting based on gender be unexpected?]

  4. [...] whichever party wins this election, it’s going to be historic. And the excitement her nomination is stirring among previously unenthusiastic conservatives is hard to [...]

  5. I was a fence sitter for McCain – after I heard her speak this morning – chalk me up for McCain/Palin – Great choice!!!

  6. There was a caucus created at U4prez to draft Sarah Palin. It’s just amazing to hear the positive responses in the comments section from Democrats, and especially women. Will it hold up?

  7. And yet with more than 90% of the black vote going to Obama, that is exactly what is happening.

Um- didn’t 90% of the black vote go to Kerry?

  8. Um- didn’t 90% of the black vote go to Kerry?

    No.

  9. Hillary supporters and Sarah Palin: a first indication.

That hillaryclintonformum.com site is still closed to lurkers, and last time I was there I saw at least 400 comments, probably many more, 99% whooping and cheering Palin, promising to donate, volunteer, and vote Republican for the first time in their lives. There were several comments about Rice and Powell, excoriating the Dems for hypocricy for ever having accused Republicans of being racists and sexists, professing the realization that it’s the Dems that are the real bigots, etc., etc. Truly a sight to see.

    Yep!
    It is!

  10. I’m very surprised you are encouraging such a cheap trick.

Palin would have been 101st on the list of possible VP’s if the democrats hadn’t had a battle between a black man and a white woman for presidential candidate.

On this occasion, the republicans have done nothing more than try and copy the Democrats. The only difference is, Obama and Clinton where candidates because thy where the best people for the job. Palin was selected because she was a woman.

Like I say, I’m surprised you’d support such a cheap trick, but hey, if you want you country ruled by cheap trick politicians the go ahead.

  11. Vote By Race

    White (77%) 58% 41% 0%
    African-American (11%) 11% 88% 0%
    Latino (8%) 44% 53% 2%

    Other (2%) 40% 54% 2%

  12. Come on, Preston. You can do the math …

  13. I guess you never took a statistics class.

  14. I guess you never took a English class. Preston.

  15. And I know you never took a course in ethics. You’ve never been able to address a direct point honestly. You did not express your stats with a margin of error let alone a link to back it up. Get over yourself, pressy. Everyone is aware of your weasel ways.

  16. Now, lets see. 88% black vote for Kerry. If you ‘ever took’ a statistics class or a college math class of about any type, you would have at least a basic understanding of a normal distribution. A big spike on the left side of the graph says one-mindedness, not diversity. Suppose you give us your theory of racial politics. My people are not bounded by the color of their skin.

  17. Artruen-

I have no idea what you’re talking about- Robbie made the point that African Americans are choosing Obama based on the color of his skin- I have shown they support white Democrats in similar numbers- what’s your point?

  18. Karl Rove, for one, thinks the choice was ‘intensely political‘:

“I think he’s going to make an intensely political choice, not a governing choice,” Rove said. “He’s going to view this through the prism of a candidate, not through the prism of president; that is to say, he’s going to pick somebody that he thinks will on the margin help him in a state like Indiana or Missouri or Virginia. He’s not going to be thinking big and broad about the responsibilities of president.”

Rove singled out Virginia governor Tim Kaine, also a Face The Nation guest, as an example of such a pick.

“With all due respect again to Governor Kaine, he’s been a governor for three years, he’s been able but undistinguished,” Rove said. “I don’t think people could really name a big, important thing that he’s done. He was mayor of the 105th largest city in America.”

Rove continued: “So if he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice where he said, `You know what? I’m really not, first and foremost, concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States.”

Oh, that he was talking about a Democrat? I guess it’s ok for a Republican though…

  19. It’s time for a change and Governor Sarah Palin will shake up Washington. Governor Palin is a tough executive who has demonstrated during her time in office that she is ready to be president. She has brought Republicans and Democrats together within her Administration and has a record of delivering on the change and reform that we need in Washington.

Governor Palin has challenged the influence of the big oil companies while fighting for the development of new energy resources. She leads a state that matters to every one of us — Alaska has significant energy resources and she has been a leader in the fight to make America energy independent.

In Alaska, Governor Palin challenged a corrupt system and passed a landmark ethics reform bill. She has actually used her veto and cut budgetary spending. She put a stop to the “bridge to nowhere” that would have cost taxpayers $400 million dollars.

As the head of Alaska’s National Guard and as the mother of a soldier herself, Governor Palin understands what it takes to lead our nation and she understands the importance of supporting our troops.

Governor Palin has the record of reform and bipartisanship that others can only speak of. Her experience in shaking up the status quo is exactly what is needed in Washington today.

  20. Might not want to push her opposition to the bridge to nowhere:

October 22, 2006, during the race for the governor’s seat (via Nexis):
    5. Would you continue state funding for the proposed Knik Arm and Gravina Island bridges?
Yes. I would like to see Alaska’s infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now–while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist.

You also might not want to emphasize her ethics credentials as she waits to hear from an independent investigator on allegations of her abusing her office.

And you’re really going to argue that having child in the military is experience to be Commander in Chief?

All I can figure is that McCain must truly believe he doesn’t have a chance to win this without some kind of miracle…

  21. Yawn. One, it’s not a bridge to nowhere; it was going to be a bridge to the airport that moves 200,000 passengers, plus cargo, a year. Two, she canned the project less than a year later because it had become too costly. Three, Obamamamamama voted for the bill.

As to you attempting to attack her ethics, big yawn. I have no doubt she will come out looking great. The jackass deserved a lot worse than to be fired.

    1. He used a Taser on his 10 year old stepson.
    2. He illegally shot a moose.
    3. He drank beer in his patrol car on one occasion.
    4. He told others his father-in-law would “eat a fucking lead bullet” if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

And after years of hearing you donks yapping about how it was mandatory for the child of the candidate serve in the military, are you going to backpedal on it now? Come on! Don’t be a hypocrite.

All I can figure is that you are scared shitless of Palin as the nominee based on your frantic posting, sliming, and dishonest and misleading posts about her. As always, your actions betray your true feelings. Get over it! She is the nominee. You should worry about what Obama is going to do without his tele-prompter and with that drunk he picked as a VP by his side.

  22. By your logic if McCain had selected a donut to become VP all of my criticism of its high fat content and meager experience would simply reveal my fear of his awesome choice.

  23. If you really thought McCain didn’t have a chance, you wouldn’t be going bat shit crazy on this blog with your lies and smears. You are truly acting pathetic. Who do you think you’re fooling?

  24. Of course he has a chance. Debating the issues isn’t “going bat shit crazy”- if you think so you’re kinda in the wrong place.

Whatever: she’s great. A brilliant choice.

  25. It’s not debate when you repeatedly try to smear Palin by lies. If you think it is, you’re kinda in the wrong place.

  26. Let’s just guarantee Hillary Clinton and the Dems will have the White house for 30 consecutive years if the McCain/ Palin ticket wins…because if they get in and the economy continues to plummet (although not their fault they will be blamed for sure) trade deficit increases, dollar gets weaker, war does not end…Dems will with out a doubt usher in a new Clinton administration in 2012 and it will endure for decades because people will no longer be willing to trust the Repubs. And I will go a step further it will usher in another third party and the Repubs will be fighting for their very political lives…thusly the Repubs will win the battle and lose the war

  27. [...] Palin — Say Goodnight, Obama August 31, 2008 — budsimmons http://urbangrounds.com/2008/08/29/sarah-palin-vp/ Posted in B Hussein Obama, Barack Hussein Obama, Barack Obama, Hussein Obama, John McCain, Obama, [...]

  28. Thusly, huh? Lol!

kathrynne: Don’t post your Arranna HoPo shit here. No one is stupid enough to believe such crap. And take a damn civics course — no administration “will endure for decades.” Or, are you moonbats going to overthrow the government ? Hahahaha! Just remember: We’re the one with the guns.

  29. So Bristol pregnant at 17 and our of wed lock – that’s pretty Liberal!

If this is her first baby (not getting involved in whether Trig is Sarah’s son or grandson), then she’s strayed from the conservative path hasn’t she?

But hey, she’s gonna get married to the father so all is swell.
I wonder how much money the father is getting to make this sweet?

    Jonny

  30. hey, listen to Sarah Palin in her own words in this NewsWeek Video that was done back in March 2008! Its very telling!
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/156190

  31. How much does your “fiance” charge for having sex with you?
And when she pulls a train down at the local pub, does she give you a discount because you’re sloppy seconds?

  32. And when she pulls a train down at the local pub, does she give you a discount because you’re sloppy seconds?

Sorry, I gotta ask – if you insist on continuing with the insults, it might be an idea if I knew what the feck you where talking about.
And what has this to do with the topic in hand?

    Jonny

  33. Hey, jackass! Spreading lies about the Palin’s minor children and insinuating that the daughter’s fiancé has been paid off, are insults.
If you are going to continue along these lines, which of course you will, consider yourself and your sloppy seconds “fiancé” fair game.

  34. Not insults at all – no where near the insults you throw at the democrats.
    Don’t be a hypocrite ANON.

And do me a favour, tell me exactly where there is an insult/lie in this post:

So Bristol pregnant at 17 and our of wed lock – that’s pretty Liberal!

If you’re talking about my query as to whether the ‘father’ is being paid off, hell – it’s a pretty good question to ask. This is politics you know, and not even your republicans are perfect!

I’m beginning to think you’re pretty desperate.
You sound off when a comment is made about your lovely republicans, yet you feel justified to launch venomous attacks on the democrats.
Your immature reaction, when you obviously fail to keep any debate on a level, is to launch personal venomous attacks at my family.

Now, as these personal insults effect me not, they do serve to show your mentality. I also remember being in the play ground at school, bitchin’ off each others mums.

Again, if you throw these insults out, you have no ground to stand on in ‘demanding’ righteous posts from anyone.

You’re acting like a spoilt little brat.

  35. What a great country we live in where we can exchange ideas and opinions and vote as we please! I, myself, am voting democrat. However, aside from just the issues, I had to ask myself and God forbid, if something happens to McCain (72 years old) will Sarah Palin be fit to the run the country? I certainly don’t think so at this stage in her life/work experience. Has anyone really stopped to think? Yes, it’s great to see a woman succeed but she is not ready to run a country. I just hope that folks will not get caught up in all of the hoopla and excitment and really put some thought into this vote.

[Editor --- Kathy, I'm blown away by people who say this, and then turn around and say that they are voting for Obama for President (not VP like Palin, but President)...despite the fact that he has substantially less political experience than she does.

    Absolutely baffling logic.]

  36. I just hope that folks will not get caught up in all of the hoopla and excitment and really put some thought into this vote.

I encourage you to follow your own advice.

  37. Sarah palin was a pick to get votes. Let me be very clear i am not addressing her qualifications, I am looking at this strategically. From the democratic race we learned that “white women”(not women of color) can effect what happens in a race if there is someone they can identify with. In HR we call it the “like me syndrome”. It’s the propensity of a recruiter to pick someone that is more like them without really looking to who may be most qualified. This is what HR professionals try and work against, but it is the norm.

Palin represents an image of a working-class mom that can bring home tha bacon and fry it! This is something that white woman can identify with. not to say thay woomen of color can’t, but that is not the target market. So if this pick provides a solid base for Mccain to go after his traditional independent voters and also pick up some conversatives that like her position.

Let’s be clear that if mccain wanted a true conservative with proven record of experience Mark sanford would have been a better choice. If he wanted a woman with exprience he could of picked Kay Hutchinson. Palin was a pick to win the election and not as a sounding board or confidant.

And I say that is brillant political move! Again this is politics, and politics are about winning. As for Palin being selected gov. of Alaska I see it just like when ventura won in Mn. People were fed up with the status quo in goverment and someone had a patfrom for something different, that spoke for heart, and people could relate to. This is not to say she didn’t do well with her on the job training as governer. And I know she was a mayor. but really, a town of 5000? Come on people. Braddock HS in Dade county has 5,380 students, does that give the principle executive experience? Ventura was a mayor of a town of 60,ooo BTW becore being elected gov. (independent and reform party)

Ok I think I made my point, yes I know there are grammatical errors but, really?

  38. It’s great the Palin’s chose life for their youngest son, but do you really think his Mom is very involved in caring for him? She knows what it’s like to give birth to a special needs child, but due to her professional choices, this child is being raised by someone else than his mother. Is this a conservative decision? I don’t think she truly knows the mental, emotional and physical challenges that mothers and caregivers of special needs children deal with on a daily basis.
Unfortunately, her family life is very hypocritical of “values” the Republicans want to believe they stand for. How many Republicans wouldn’t love to have children who turned out as well as Chelsea Clinton. But it’s amazing how people can make any situation fit their needs.

  39. palin and bush, oh what a wonderfucked world

  40. In this corrupted political war of the presidential election,I always get tired of listning to the bad trashing of the opponents. But the worst is yet to come.I just love it when they say that George Bush stole the election. THE BEST MAN WON!!! Wether it was by fraud,by smarts,by cheating or what ever you want to call it.Their is always excuses. This particular war is ending up to be a racist war.And O-bomb-us will lose. I can`t wait to hear the libs reaction to this one.I don`t want to argue with any person that just trashes people . We all know that all these polititions are attorneys ,and they are all compulsive liers.WE also know that trashing will not change the outcome of the election. But I do know that Mr and Mrs, O-BOMB-US has brought race into this election and it will cause him to lose.
So, why don`t you just go out and vote and shut up the trshing bull crap. I am willing to bet that one half of the people out there doing the trashing have never voted in their life ,and never will.

  41. lol!!!
Oh, the crow you had to eat.
