I’ve read a couple of places today that Lance Armstrong is coming out of retirement to race in the 2009 Tour De France:
Seven-time champion Lance Armstrong will come out of retirement and compete in next year’s Tour de France, VeloNews reported Monday, citing sources close to the situation.
Armstrong, who will turn 37 on Sept. 18, will join the Astana team and compete in five road races, the sources told VeloNews.
He will compete in the Amgen Tour of California, Paris-Nice, the Tour de Georgia, the Dauphine-Libere and the Tour de France. The sources told VeloNews that Armstrong will receive no salary or bonuses.
Armstrong’s manager, Mark Higgins, would not comment.
Sources told VeloNews that Armstrong’s comeback will be the focal point of a story in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair, to be published later this month.
We had dinner and drinks a few weeks ago at Bagpipes Irish Pub with Mark Higgins, who is one of our friends. Nothing about Lance’s plans to come back — but then again, Mark is very protective of confidential information about Lance (as he should be).
We did talk about Lance’s second place finish in the Leadville Trail 100 (one of the most grueling mountain bike races in the world) last month. And we talked about Lance’s sub 3-hour Boston Marathon earlier this year.
And seeing Lance finish the Nike Human Race (10K) last week (finishing 6th in Austin out of nearly 15K runners in a little under 35 minutes) — it’s obvious that Lance is still training hard and enjoying competing.
So I wouldn’t be surprised if this rumor was true. I’ll ping Mark to see if I can get a comment out of him…but even if I do, it would likely be off-the-record for now.

Even if he were on a team in a supportive role I would bet it would be exciting. I would also wager that he is still the best climber in the world. Personally, I cant wait to see this on VS.
