One of the true joys of living in Austin is the live music. Not only is it seemingly everywhere around town, it’s often free, and it’s almost always really good.
A lot of Austin restaurants, bars, and pubs have outdoor patios and seating areas — another wonderful thing about living in Austin is that it’s almost always a nice time to sit outside and have dinner or a few drinks. And anytime you walk into one of these places, you’re almost always greeted by some good live music.
You just never know quite what you’re going to get.
Like this evening.
We stopped into Green Mesquite BBQ (Barton Springs Rd near Lamar Blvd) since we had Angus with us and we wanted to eat at a dog friendly restaurant (another great perk about living in Austin … exceptionally dog friendly).
In fact, when our waitress came back with our drinks, she also had a sheet of butcher paper with some ribs bones and a hunk of over-cooked brisket for Angus. Who was very appreciative.
Right about the time we were ordering some pork ribs and brisket, a five-piece bluegrass band (The Fundamentalists) started playing. And they were good — very entertaining. Lots of families sitting out on the big patio, probably there specifically for some good old-timey gospel and bluegrass.
Here’s a quick little video I shot while waiting for our food:

1. Don’t your other dogs get jealous? You seem to take Angus out and leave them at home.
2. Did Angus even taste the brisket? Or, did he swallow it whole like most dogs do? I never understand how dogs can enjoy people food so much when swoosh, it’s gone.
I have to say, I only went to Green Mesquite once and was thoroughly unimpressed. Take those dogs to Cooper’s!
You really can’t go wrong with the live music in Austin.
I remember when I was there in college, and we were hanging out in a little bar on 6th, and who walks in? Bruce Willis. Not only was he very cool, but he got up and jammed with the band. It was awesome.
John, you’re right — Green Mesquite’s bbq is average at best. And their brisket isn’t even average.
But their sides are good, we like the atmosphere, and they’re very dog friendly.
Even though the food is a bit under “great”, we like the place…we don’t usually make it a destination, it’s usually more a matter of we are passing by, have the dog(s) with us, and are hungry.
Is that what you rednecks call music. Sounds like somebody grating their fingernails down a blackboard.
