The Art of Manliness and Thanksgiving

Timely video from the guys over at The Art of Manliness (one of my very favorite blogs) on how to carve a turkey:

Official Turkey Carver has always been my job — and one that I relish. It’s an important man-skill that all men should know, and then make sure to pass on to their sons.

The Art of Manliness has a separate post on 5 Thanksgiving Traditions to Pass Along to Your Son (including how to carve the turkey).

The other four are:

  • Delivering meals to those less fortunate
  • Watching the Cowboys game (even if you are rooting against them)
  • Diving into the leaf pile
  • Saying grace

In our family it has always been a tradition that the oldest male present says grace over Thanksgiving Dinner. For years (with a few exceptions) that was always my Dad.

This year it will be different because my Dad passed away earlier this year. Today, November 26th, would have been his 75th birthday.

So as we (2 brothers, a sister and myself) all gather tomorrow along with our families at my Mom’s for Thanksgiving Dinner, that tradition of saying grace will now fall to me as the oldest child.

I hope I can say the prayer without choking up.

P.S. We will also be watching the Cowboys game. And all 16 of us will be rooting for the Cowboys!

  2. Have to agree on this Robbie – (goodness, this is getting terribly liberal over here!).

We had a lot of trouble in the UK when ’some’ respected chefs decided to go into the field to actually kill their plates of meat.
To me, this is a natural process, and I speak from me being a vegetarian for three years (after seeing an horrific film on how Beagle Dogs are treated in France and the UK border towns).
If you want to eat the meat, then have the balls to watch it killed.
Why go into a supermarket and buy a budget chicken/turkey and expect not to know its so cheap because it’s a had a pretty shitty life?
