Eric Cathey, murderer and Texas Death Row inmate
UPDATE — Cathey receives execution reprieve.
The court remanded Cathey’s appeal to a lower court for a hearing on his claim that he is mentally retarded.
What a joke. The guy’s not retarded. He’s a cold blooded killer. If he was retarded, why couldn’t we have gotten that out of the way sometime in the last 13 years.

Tonight, shortly after 6:00 p.m. local time, the State of Texas will put Eric Dewayne Cathey to death for the 1995 kidnapping and murder of Christina Castillo in Houston.
Cathey and several others abducted Castillo from the parking lot of her apartment complex and tried to force her to tell them about her boyfriend’s drug and money dealings.
When Castillo couldn’t give them any information, they taped her hands, eyes, and mouth shut. They beat and kicked her viciously trying to get information out of her.
They then drove her to a vacant lot, shot her three times in the head, and dumped her body.
The body of 20-year-old Christina Castillo was not discovered until twelve days later by a family searching for aluminum cans.
Two of Cathey’s accomplices testified against him, claiming that Cathey was the trigger man who shot Castillo.
Cathey claims that he is innocent.
Some people are just no damned good, and the world would be a better place without them. Eric Cathey is one such person.

I have never understood why defense attorneys wait to the last second to pull the “Oh, my client is retarded” defense. Mental retardation is something that should be looked at when the person is CHARGED with the crime and not when he’s being strapped down for his Texas Flu Shot.

There was no forensic eveidence convicting Eric only here say, by those involved who could have roled over on him for a deal or who could have been coercied.
I can’t believe what I am hearing. Not only do I not believe in the death penalty, but it certainly should not happen when there is doubt. There is certainly doubt. I can’t imagine the pain of losing a loved one, but bottom line no one can be certain what happened and a mans life shouldn’t be taken.

Cathey v. State
The gun used to shoot the victim was sold by Cathey to someone not involved in the crime. Cathey also made admissions to others not involved in the murder that he shot the girl. When arrested, Cathey possessed a “memento” of the murder, i.e., a photo of the victim he stole from her purse. Sounds like Cathey was a serial killer in the making.
Um that’s where yall are wrong. He didn’t sell the gun to anyone he tried to kidnap another person and 2 young girls that were only 2 yrs old and it back fired on his ass. The person he tried to kidnap wasn’t having that shit – the gun was recovered and given to the cops. He is not mentally retarded – you would think he was given the things he did but he isn’t. No, you’re right. I thought the court had issued a stay and then lifted it and proceeded with the execution. But they ordered hearings on whether he was retarded or not.

Well I’m also his family, I’m his sister-in-law. To comment on the statement above, no we’re not lowlife, we’re just a family that loves one another. We’re very sorry for what happened to Christina and my heart goes out to the family. The truth is I am very appalled at how people are so quick to condemn a person when they don’t even know all the facts. Have you people ever heard of wrongful conviction? Well unfortunately our judicial system is not also correct. The blame had to be on someone and they choose Eric. Do you even know what got him this conviction? Well the states witness lied about having a deal that’s what got him the conviction. There was no evidence it was a bunch of hear say and finger pointing. Forensics tested a gun that in all actuality was not the gun; the task Force in Houston received a letter written in Spanish from the victims live in boyfriend telling them that the murderer was someone else and he gave the name also another inmate wanted to make a deal for lesser time and called the police and told them he could give them info about this murder and he gave them the same name. There has never been an extensive investigation done on this case. Eric Cathey is not guilty of this crime, but if the state kills another innocent man, you people could care less as long as it’s not a white man, right. To be honest with you I could care less what negativity you all have to say because what you think doesn’t matter. Just like you think we’re low life well I think the same about you.

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to post your thoughts. I never lose sight of the fact that the family of the condemned are victims, too.
I disagree with you, however, as to Eric’s guilt. You don’t know that Eric is guilty or not. You weren’t there when the crime happened. You can believe with all your heart that he’s innocent, but the facts (whether or not you believe them) shows that he is guilty.
I also disagree with your statement “if the state kills another innocent man, you people could care less as long as it’s not a white man.” There are three glaring falsehoods in your statement:
1) The state of Texas has not executed a single man or woman who was later exonerated for their crimes and found to be not guilty of the crime for which they were executed. If you know of such a case where a man was legally cleared after he was executed, please send me a link.
2) I care deeply about the integrity of our justice system here in Texas. Especially as it applies to the death penalty. And I would care immensely if an innocent person where to be executed by the state, which would mean that something went horribly wrong with the process.
3) Race has nothing to do with my feelings about this case. Check my Death Penalty archives; I write about nearly every DP execution here in Texas, regardless of race. And I’m equally supportive of white and Hispanics getting their deserved needles as I am of any other person. I hate all murderers, regardless of race.

I have reviewed the facts on your brother-in-law’s case and in my conclusion he got what he deserved. To be honest I feel he should have been executed a long time ago and he has drained tax payers money long enough.The claim that Eric Cathey is mentally retarded is insane if not ludicrous. People who are charged with murder do not wait until the last minute to claim they are mentally retarded. Glancing at his pen pal requests Eric Cathey writes very well.
