Benjamin Chovanec Sr., 88, a retired farmer from Ellinger died Monday.

That’s the entirety of his obituary in the Statesman.

But, as with most things in life, there is much, much more to the life of Ben Chovanec Sr. of Ellinger (a town of 200 people almost exactly halfway between Austin and Houston at the junction of HWY 71 and FM 2503).

In addition to being a farmer, Ben Chovanec was also Cpl. Benjamin Chovenec, US Army.

Cpl. Chovenec fought in World War II and was a Prisoner of War. After returning home from the war he came back home to the largely-Czech town of Ellinger to raise a family and run a farm.

Today, 14 Patriot Guard Riders rode to Ellinger to pay their respects to Cpl Chovanec. It was an honor to be there as final military honors were rendered to Mr. Chovenec.

The church were Chovenec’s services were held was pure small town Texas — remote, old, and overlooking vast expanses of sweeping hills and brush. It was remarkably picturesque:

A life well lived indeed, sir. God speed, Cpl. Chovenec.
