Great article by Peggy Noonan at The Wall Street Journal on Bush’s true legacy.
Most important and spot-on paragraph:
But it comes at a key moment for Mr. Obama, because it gives him a certain amount of cover to be serious about what needs to be done. What’s at stake for him is two words. When Republicans say, in coming years, “At least Bush kept us safe,” Democrats will not want tacked onto the end of that sentence, “unlike Obama.”
Peggy just coined what will become the most prominent and lasting phrase to be associated with Obama’s single term as US President.
Go read the entire thing.
_______
My favorite react to the article is this post at the Babalu Blog — mostly for their near-perfect description of the panty-wetting left:
No matter what those constipated, asswipes, progressive, leftist, unrepentant, Godless, self serving elitist wanker, hypocrite, pansy, girlie men, che loving, obsessive compulsive, anti Semite, anti Christian, pro islamic terrorist, pro castro, pro chavez, mofos, horeshit eating, penis breath, liberals out there have to say, especially those self grandiose wanks who have nothing better to do than to obsess with what we write over here, who purport to get their only action at the local strip club, but fail, and who insist that global warming is the causes of their emasculation and mental impotence, and who feel that they have a right to marry goats, have to say about President Bush, . . . he has kept us safe since 9/11. They don’t want to admit it. They like to say things are more dangerous here today than they were pre 9/11, but the fact is they are so full of caca that they will come up with some other inane argument (stolen from Noam Chomsky) to say something to the contrary. They’re tearing down their Obama altars since they are pissed that not enough “progressives” have been appointed to the cabinet, and will continue to blame Bush for everything including the festering sores on their bodies.
There is so much awesomness in that one paragraph — I’m kicking myself for having not written it myself.
“…[they] will continue to blame Bush for everything including the festering sores on their bodies.”?
Brilliant!

Good to see you have your eyes fixed on the prize, Robbie. A terrorist attack under Obama would be the wingnut’s wet dream come true.
And if it does happen, at least we’ll be able to say: “Obama kept the Constitution safe.”
Oh, and someone needs to remind Noonan (and you, apparently) who was reading My Pet Goat on September 11, 2001. I think the dead and dispossessed from Hurrican Katrina might also have a bone to pick with her assertion that Bush kept us safe.
Geeze Pat, so he was reading to children. What would you do if you were told in front of little kids, not to mention the enormity of what you had been told, just what would you do? Immediately run off? Or, maybe just a couple moments to collect your thoughts? After all, it wasn’t just an ordinary moment. Anything could be happening. All you have is your senses. Do you really think he continued thinking of pet goats?
I’ll almost guarantee you that Obama will be so tested at an unexpected time in an unexpected place. Better hope he doesn’t run off screaming somewhere. Better hope he takes a moment to calm down, collect his thoughts and get himself together enough to make some rational decisions.
Peggy pissed me off with her smoozing with leftard journalists, during the campaign. I’ll consider reading her piece, later.
As for Babalu, this is the first time I’ve heard her go off like that, but leftards are not her favorite people.
As to the theme, yes W did keep us safe. The actions he took put our enemies, and so-called friends, on the defensive. Terrorists have died in large numbers, their funding has been disrupted, as well as their communications. I am thankful we had him during this time, instead of the ignorant and incompetent crash-dummies the donks ran against him in ‘00 and ‘04.
I had many bones to pick with W, but not when it came to national security.
Now, for B-HO, any crisis, or moment that requires quick and decisive action, will result in us being reminded he is the Wizard Of UHHHHH’s, and will place us in greater danger. His default mode is of a talker, and will want to chat our enemies to death, while they build weapons and plot against us. Much like the Horny Hick did from ‘92 to ‘00. B-HO is a man of verbosity, not a man of action.
We will see on Monday, if he is a man eligible to be sworn in as POTUS.
What? no “maricón?” I love it when Babalú calls them maricones.
It’s scary for you isn’t it, now that your daddy figure will be gone in just a few short days. With all of your fear, anger and hostility, perhaps you should take up hockey.
Buck up. It will be ok, really. Like a big bright candle in the darkness, I see good things in your future.
When you aspire to write a paragraph that contains the words “penis breath”, well, a Pulitzer can’t be far behind, can it?
Dianne – the point isn’t how he reacted on the day of the attacks, it was what he and his aides did for the preceding 9 months that should be kept inn perspective when saying he kept us safe, because that is simply not the case. Clinton shares the blame here too for addressing the symptoms instead of the disease, but when the USS Cole was attacked just weeks before the 2000 election, Clinton finally began seeing the light and his NSA tried to convey a sense of urgency to the incoming adminstration about these mounting terrorist threats, but the Bushies were being intentionally tone deaf to anything Clinton suggested. They acted as if the Cole was just another failure of Democratic White House that would help ensure GOP majorities throughout Bush’s term. This was his sole focus when he was elected and for the ensuing months thereafter. This is well-documented history BTW, it’s just everything pre-9/11 in treated with marginal significance when it is actually a far more instructive topic of study in terms of the prevention of future attacks than is Bush’s radical and un-American overreaction to 9/11.
Pat, you are so full of shit.
But then, I’m stating the obvious.
I pity you, when you can’t blame W for…well…everything!
You continue with the “un-American” meme, based on unreliable and loony sources. You want to see a serious loss of constitutional rights? If a nuclear device is ever set off in this country, they will mostly evaporate. The point to this is, W kept this country safe, post 9-11, and no amount of whining or lying can alter that fact. Clintoon didn’t, and many of us don’t think B-HO can or will. He’s a mouth piece for his owners, not a man of action.
Thank God we had W, during the past eight years. He helped set the course for a strong national defense. We can only hope this thing that just got elected, isn’t successful tearing it all down, before we can be shed of him.
Look at the title of your article it reads “unlike Obama”. Sorry but Obama isn’t actually the president yet in case you didn’t know. Have you rednecks forgotten that 9/11 happened on Bush’s watch – what was Bush doing to kill Bin laden prior to 9/11, well i’ll tell you, jack shit, and sorry No2Liberals but Clinton did more to prevent terrorism than Bush ever did. Bush did however do a good job of keeping 3000 dead troops safe didn’t he by starting a war with a country that had nothing to do with 9/11.
Kiwi, you are supposed to stop digging when you hit bottom.
You are still as uninformed and clueless, as ever.
Clintoon did nothing to stop the spread of terrorism, but his only saving grace is, he didn’t do as much to spread it as Carter did.
As to your point about B-HO not being POTUS yet, you did get one thing right, but forgot to add, he may not be.
Sorry No2Liberals, your the one who is clueless sorry, you just can’t accept the fact that Bush is a complete f**k up and it’s people like you who put him there in the first place. Don’t you realise by now that most republicans are sick of Bush as well, why do you think they voted the moron out, you really are the last of a dying breed. Thankfully in 20-30 years conservatism will be all but dead and you thick bible bashing phony christians will no longer be able to impose you crap on everybody else.
ps. please do not insult Clinton by comparing him to W.
Kiwi, you just have a bad case of BDS, like Pat.
W has been a great President, not perfect, he didn’t veto enough huge spending bills, but great on National Security, and was presiding over a booming economy, until the leftards took control of Congress two years ago, and it’s been all down hill since.
Republicans didn’t vote W out, they just didn’t vote, or rather conservatives didn’t, but then you are so fucked in the head, you could never understand the realities of events here.
Your predictions of the future are, I’m certain, as ridiculous as your current assessments of events.
The future is bright, indeed, for conservatives. Voters need a reminder, from time to time, to know just how bad things can be, when a leftard is in charge.
Oh, and I would never compare that sick, impeached, disbarred, fucked-up cigar sniffing, furniture stealing Clintoon to W. W will soon be living in a neighborhood near mine, and he is more than welcome.
Continue to vent, kiwi, you will be alone, now.
Time to watch the OU Sooners, kick some bootie.
