Louisiana Voters Drain the Swamp of William Jefferson

Voters (from a heavily Democratic district, too, mind you) have done what Congressional Democrat leadership would not do — get rid of one of the most corrupt men in all of Congress (and that’s saying something…):

Nine-term Democratic Rep. William Jefferson, who has been battling scandals and a federal indictment for the past three years, lost his bid for re-election on Saturday.

Louisiana Democratic Rep. William Jefferson has been embroiled in a bribery scandal.

Republican challenger Anh “Joseph” Cao, an attorney and community organizer, defeated Jefferson in the 2nd Congressional district race. He will become the first Vietnamese-American elected to Congress.

With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Cao had almost 50 percent of the vote to Jefferson’s 47 percent.

The 2nd Congressional district, in and around New Orleans, is mostly African-American and heavily Democratic, and Jefferson appeared to be favored to win re-election going into the election.

“The people of the second district were able to transcend party, transcend race,” Cao said after claiming victory Saturday night.

Uh, Jefferson isn’t merely involved in a “bribery scandal” — they guy had $90K of dirty money hidden in his freezer at home.

And despite her promise to “drain the swamp” and to run the “cleanest Congress” of all time — Rep. Nancy Pelosi has done nothing to oust Jefferson.

When a black Democrat is defeated in a majority black Democratic by a non-black Republican — well, that was one piss-poor dirty Democrat.

The only thing remaining for Jefferson now, hopefully, is some prison time.

How’s that for change, Nancy?

From SkewRed:

Well, well.  I am becoming more and more impressed with Louisianans (my parents are born and bred Cajuns, so I have some experience with the state). They’ve gone from continually electing some of the most corrupt leaders (eg. Gov. Edwards) to some of the best (eg. Gov. Jindal).

Jammie Wearing Fool points out what is turning out to be the best news for Republicans this election cycle:

Hey, where’d those Obama coattails go? His party is now 0-3 in elections held since November 4.

Without The Lightworker on the ballot in 2010, who’s going to bring out the voters who historically don’t turn out?

  2. I was pleasantly surprised to read the AP story this morning.
The fact that Ice Tray Jefferson has remained in Congress since his indictment, is in itself an indictment on the poor character and quality of the donk Congressional leadership.
I did read that turnout was low in this election, which is indicative of a poor candidate, that even loyal party members won’t vote for…ask McCain about that.
Good for the voters of NOLA, and Louisiana.
Now if only Ice Tray, and his co-conspirator family members, will be prosecuted, indicted, and incarcerated.
