Iam shocked the Pope isn't excommunicating Pelosi and all the politicians who straddle the fence and think that Heaven doesn't see. Why doesn't he refuse them Holy Communion? They are not in Communion with the Holy Lamb of GOD-give them not HIS BLOOD and BODY. These are Holy things not to be given to the smug and profane and unrepentent. What is wrong with the Pope-what is he waiting for?

Brian, here is my take on it:
I dont think Jesus ever told anyone they were going to hell. If anything, just the opposite. When Jesus died on the cross, all sins were forgiven. This includes future sins. Also, there is no filter, and the forgiveness includes all of mankind. We all get a free ticket courtesy of Jesus. Since he paid the price for admission, no one has to lift a finger. So, it seems that even Nancy Pelosi will be going to heaven via Divine grace

So what are you yapping about? That there is no hell? Or that the Pope is Jesus?

Hmmm...did Jesus tell anyone in the Gospels that they were going to Hell? He did warn about the possibilty through parables, but did he specifically tell a person that is where they were going? If so, please expound.

I don't think I've ever posted a response to one of Pat's postings' but the shear stupidity of the above post just stunned me. It not only IS the Pope's "right to question someone's piety," it is his obligation as the head of the Catholic church. Catholic's view the Pope as God's appointed representative on earth. In the Catholic church, the word of the Pope is as the word of God. He is responsible for leading the church and unifying the faithful around the word of God. Belief in the tennets of the Church is not like choosing a meal from a cafeteria line. You either are a believer or you are not. Anything else is lip service.

You don't have any more right to question someone's piety anymore than the pope or anyone else does. I know that's one of the less attractive attributes of your average theist, but that doesn't make it legitimate. I'm an atheist and even I don't presume to know the degree of any particular theist's devotion to whatever faith he or she claims. If someone wants to call themselves a Catholic or a Baptist or Muslim, why should that matter to an atheist or agnostic?

It's another good illustration of your authoritarian mindset - you want nothing more than to control everyone else's behavior one way or another, in a manner in accordance with your personal code of ethics. Even to the point of denying people ownership of their professed faith. Your hubris and arrogance know no bounds.

I am agnostic.

That doesn't preclude me from believing that abortion is an abhorrent and immoral act. My opposition to abortion isn't on religious grounds.

Nor does me agnosticism doesn't preclude me from understanding and respecting the doctrine and teachings of Christianity and of Catholicism. I don't have to a nutritionist to know that broccoli and carrots are good for me.

You're not really that obtuse, are you?
