If anything, just the opposite. When Jesus died on the cross, all sins were forgiven. This includes future sins. Also, there is no filter, and the forgiveness includes all of mankind. It not only IS the Pope's "right to question someone's piety," it is his obligation as the head of the Catholic church. Catholic's view the Pope as God's appointed representative on earth. In the Catholic church, the word of the Pope is as the word of God. He is responsible for leading the church and unifying the faithful around the word of God. Belief in the tennets of the Church is not like choosing a meal from a cafeteria line. You either are a believer or you are not. Anything else is lip service. I'm an atheist and even I don't presume to know the degree of any particular theist's devotion to whatever faith he or she claims. If someone wants to call themselves a Catholic or a Baptist or Muslim, why should that matter to an atheist or agnostic? It's another good illustration of your authoritarian mindset - you want nothing more than to control everyone else's behavior one way or another, in a manner in accordance with your personal code of ethics.
