Colin,
I thought I linked a piece here the other day, but must not have.
According to a report by Stephanoupoulousousous this past weekend, cap and trade is dead.
Oprompta can ask for one of the grabs he wanted, and he has decided to grab for health care.
Oprompta can still do a lot of damage, I don't dispute that, but we can certainly curtail a lot of the spending if we can flush the House.

Reading "Legalese" is definitely not my strong suit, but if I am reading the bill correctly, it doesn't create any kind of mandatory service. The section:
“service-learning is a mandatory part of the curriculum in all of the secondary schools served by the local educational agency.”

is how a "Youth Engagement Zone" is defined. In other words, IF "service-learning is mandatory..." THEN it's a Youth Engagement Zone.

So I don't think we're talking about drafting our kids into the Hitler Youth.

Even so, I'm going to contact my Senators and my Congressman and tell them I am against the bill, it's nothing but a waste of money.

If any of you have more experience/skill at reading legislation, I would appreciate confirmation or denial of my analysis.

I have two teenagers at home, so I am very concerned about this.

Retire05, Diane -

I can't find the mention of mandatory enrollment/'volunteerism.' Can you paste that passage here?

Thank you,
Tom

Retire05,

Ok Ok -- easy now! I really haven't read it, but I will. No need to bust out the 'moron' threat.

I do indeed have skin in the game and I appreciate your passion for any legislation that affects our kids. I was hoping that the bill emphasized a need for service-learning in schools, but it sounds like it's going a good bit beyond that.

Best,
Tom

I'm also very concerned about HR 1388. The problem is the unspoken language leaves the interpretation of service up to Congress and I'll tell you what - Congress and the democrats are the last group I want to give that interpretation to. And MANDATORY? MY ASS! People better wake up in this country and fast.

No2L, we still suffer from that effects of the other obama, Jimma Cotta.
We will suffer long term for obama no matter what. When the next amnesty is granted, and it will be, when cap and trade is put in, and it will be, when our energy development is further delayed and mired down and on and on, the damage will be done.
No amount of re-writing history by the left can put carters admin in a good light, it was a disaster for the country. This one is well on its way to topping it. in just 60 days.

The comparison of B-HO to Hitler is not just an invocation of Godwin's Law.
Who's Hitler Now?
His forced volunteerism is a serious threat to the sanctity of the family.

Pam, I disagree, and a look back at the midterm election in '94 is one example. An even better one is 1966.

Lyndon Johnson’s 1964 election landslide, big Democratic gains in Congress, and the subsequent flood of liberal legislation flowing from Washington persuaded many observers that the Republican Party was nearly defunct. At best, they reasoned, it would take years for the GOP to reconstitute itself and regain relevance in the American system.
-----------
When all was said and done, the GOP gained 47 House seats, three Senate seats, eight governorships, and 557 state legislative seats. Republican governors controlled 25 states, the most since the early 1950s. Republicans actually won a majority of the aggregated national vote for U.S. Senate. Of the 38 House districts where Democrats had replaced Republicans in 1964, only 14 remained in Democratic hands in 1966.

We can fight back now, and regain the House in '10, and put an end to the outrageous spending.
There are many vulnerable donks, that are starting to buck the donk leadership in some of the legislation coming up. Cap and trade is dead, and the commie health care idea is up against it.
Be positive.
