New Texas License Plates

Back in February of last year, Texans were allowed to vote on the design of our next general vehicle license plate — the license plate that will be on the front and back of nearly every car and truck driving Texas roads (click the link to see my submitted design).

The choices were from the following designs:

Texas Plates

And the winner was the third plate, with the clouds over a hill country landscape. I’m not thrilled about the plate — but it’s better than any of the other plates they presented (including the bottom design, which is the current plate).

According to the Houston Chronicle, the plates are being stamped at the Wynn Unit in Huntsville, where inmates have been producing plates since the mid 1970s.

In addition to the new design, there is one other significant change in the design:

Besides the new design and extra digit, the most noticeable change is that the plate is completely flat, except for a raised edge that serves as a frame. The numbers and letters no longer are stamped.

Instead, a computer-generated digital image is transferred onto a roll of adhesive-backed reflective material that’s affixed to a like-size strip of aluminum.

I’m not sure if this is the design that will also be used for motorcycle license plates. I doubt it and hope not.

  1. They need a design recognizing that Texas enforces the death penalty: “Texas: You kill our citizens, we’ll kill you.” The fact that they are made in Huntsville is icing on the cake.

  3. The new plate is nice, but I wish they would have kept the mounted cowboy, its seems to represent the texas attitude ans state of mind that seperates us from the rest of the country. GOD BLESS TEXAS, forever.

  4. My truck had plates that were fine. Then one day new ones showed up without my ordering them. They were the new plates of the old design. Now a couple of months later I guess I will be taking the new old plates off and replacing them with these newer ones.

I think we are paying too much taxes!!!! I think they are trying to use the remaining budget from last year so they can keep asking for too much money to keep there jobs so they can continue this kind of bull!!

I have a voice, WE the people are their boss, I say FIRE them and get a competent government!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I do not like any of the current license plates. I like the old ones with Texas and a flag next to it either on left or right side that ran most of the 90’s. Much simpler design and its Texas! instead of going overboard with designs. Look at California – just simply california in a nice type style redletters with a series of numbers. not a mish mash of artsy stuff on the plates that makes u wonder what’s that. no need for that.
