Happy Flag Day

Flag Day, first observed in 1877, and then in 1916 President Wilson issued a proclamation asking for June 14 to be observed as the National Flag Day. But it wasn’t until August 3, 1949, that Congress approved the national observance, and President Harry Truman signed it into law as a day for all Americans to celebrate and show respect for our flag.

Our flag is representative of our independence and our unity as a nation — one nation, indivisible. Our flag has a proud and glorious history. It was at the lead of every battle fought by Americans. Many people have died protecting it. It is even speculated that it stands proudly on the surface of the moon.

No nations flag is more recognized than the flag of the United States of America.

I’m a drape-yourself-in-the-flag, fly-a-flag-from-the-front-porch, flag-waving, flag-saluting, flag-loving guy.

Our US Flag, which flies everyday from the front of our home.

Our US Flag, which flies everyday from the front of our home.

President Barack Obama says that Americans should proudly celebrate today as it is Flag Day, and also says Americans should demonstrate their pride and honor the Old Glory by flying it wherever possible. He has extended the observance of the national Flag Day by proclaiming the coming week as national Flag Week.

Good for him. I’m glad to see he’s come full-circle on our flag from the days when he refused to wear a Flag lapel pin. Even if it is only for political reasons and not actual patriotism and love of our Flag.

Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, delivered a 1914 Flag Day address in which he repeated words he said the flag had spoken to him that morning:

I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.

How true.

Burning our flag might be a protected right, and some of you might regard it as symbolic speech. Ok, but what it symbolizes is hatred for this country. Simple as that. Nothing more and nothing less. And if I ever see it happening in person, I’ll go all Rick Monday and do whatever I can to save that flag.

  1. I too love our flag, and all the good it represents.
Only the worst people run from it, or spit upon it.
Those who cherish freedom and liberty are attracted to it.
I still haven’t seen anyone die from trying to swim away from it in a rickety boat.
I would also go postal on anyone I saw desecrating it.
I just wish more people that hang a flag on their home, would take the time to learn the proper protocol.

  2. You took the words right outta my mouth guys. Most of my family served under the stars and strips with courage and honor to keep us free. I will protect the flag at all costs as a symbol of freedom for all.

  3. Someone makes a bumper sticker that reads:
“If you must burn our flag, please wrap yourself in it First.”

  4. I wonder if Michelle burned one yesterday.

  5. I know that Pat burned one and defecated on the ashes. Anti-American sacks of shit tend to do that.
