Austin drug deal goes bad: If you can’t trust your friendly neighborhood drug dealer, who can you trust?
Cody Duggan, 23,wanted some drugs. 150 “bars” of Xanax to be exact.
So he contacted his local Xanax dealers, packed his semi-automatic handgun in his waistband, and agreed to meet them at a shady apartment complex on the south side of town.
And it’s a good thing too, because — as it turns out — his drug dealers were dishonest businessmen, who had plans of their own to rob Cody Duggan.
Which ended in a night of gunfire, two men shot, one man dead, and one man — Duggan — charged with murder:
The plan was to trick Cody Duggan into handing over money during a drug deal without giving him the narcotics he paid for.
But the scheme ended early Wednesday, police say, when Duggan shot two men — one fatally.
Duggan, 23, has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of Thomas Geredine Jr.
Carlson [the other drug dealer who was shot] told police that Duggan and Geredine pulled out guns but that Geredine was shot in the stomach before he could fire, according to the affidavit. Carlson was shot in the shoulder as he ran away, he told police.
“I don’t know if T.J. was shooting or not,” Carlson told officers, according to the affidavit. T.J. is a nickname for Geredine, according to the document. “I assume that he would have shot if he could, but T.J. dropped straight to the ground after that first shot.”
Now, far be it for me to defend a drug-dealing scum like Cody Duggan — but if Geredine pulled a gun too, it seems like there might be a case here for self-defense.
Either way, I’m glad that one gun-toting, unscrupulous drug dealer is dead. And I hope Duggan spends the rest of his life in prison. Not for killing Geredine — he did society a solid there — but for being too stupid to live amongst decent, law-abiding people.
As far as Joshua Carlson — he was already on probation for a 2007 conviction of aggravated assault with deadly weapons charge. Hopefully this will send him back to prison for a long, long time too.
An added benefit to this post? I bet I end up selling at least one text link ad for the key word “Xanax.”
