Good Police Work: 1 – Low Life Street Thug: 0

Back in May, Senior Police Officer Leonardo Quintana was forced to shoot 18-year old Nathanial Sanders to death after Sanders reached for a gun while he was in the back seat of a friend’s car.
The typical response from the black community and their race-hustling grievance mongering community leaders — a black man had been shot by a cop.
Which meant 1) the cop is a racist, and 2) the young black man who was shot was an ideal citizen, a great person, and did not deserve to be shot to death regardless of what illegal crime he was involved in.
The response from the local media and city leaders was disgusting.
The newspaper (Austin American-Statesman) and TV news stations couldn’t gush enough about what a tragic loss of life this was. The coverage was so pro-Sanders and so anti-Officer Quintana, you’d almost think the young street thug hadn’t pulled a gun on a good officer who wanted nothing more than to make it home to see his family at the end of his shift.
Thankfully Michael Jackson died to interrupt the news cycle, or we’d probably still have round-the-clock coverage of Sander’s “tragic” death at the hands of the out-of-control and racist APD.
Officer Not Indicted
A Travis County grand jury, after hearing all the evidence (something the Statesman and City Manager Marc Ott couldn’t be bothered to do), decided that it was a lawful shooting and did not indict Officer Quintana.
Unfortunately, Quintana was indicted by the local black community and community leaders:
Sanders’ family and some community members expressed disappointment at the decision.
Well, of course they did.
It’s much easier than to accept the responsibility and accountability of supporting a drug using, gang-banging, low-life thug who likely would have put a slug into Officer Quintana had the officer not been able to fire first.
From the court documents:
Quintana tried to awake Sanders by nudging him in the shoulder and performing a sternum rub, according to Hitzelberg. That is when Sanders grabbed Quintana’s hands. Quintana then raised Sanders’ shirt and noticed the gun. Lehmberg said the two began “briefly pulling back and forth for control of the gun.”
Quintana backed away from the car and fired a total of five rounds, two of which struck Sanders and one of which hit Smith.
According to an autopsy report, Sanders was shot once in the back of the head and once in the shoulder. He tested positive for cocaine, marijuana and a form of Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication, the report showed.
And, lest you think that Sanders might have been a choir boy in the wrong place at the wrong time:
He had been arrested days earlier on a charge of robbery by assault and released on bail from the Travis County Jail. He also was serving a form of probation related to a 2008 arrest for possession of crack cocaine, according to court records.
Uh huh. Nice kid. It’s no wonder the community went to the wall to support him.

I am REALLY getting tired of that BS cop out too. Every time we go through this scenario where a white cop doing his JOB shoots a black punk we gotta listen to some loud mouth, point the blame on someone OTHER than the suspect or his parents (and their tired excuse of “the man keeping them down”)Publicity Monger including Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton.

i too am tired of the black community always grapping about the goings on with some of our black troubled youth. Wasn’t he arrested for aggravated assault within a few weeks of his death? I hate this has happened and I feel for the parents. When you live that type of life style bad things will happen. The black community needs to educate our male youth.
When you are pulled over by APD, do what they say. Don’t run, wrestle or mouth off to APD. It is a proven fact that bad things will happen. Why doesn’t Nelson Lender go into the infected areas and try to reach those that are fallen by the waste side? We don’t need more fallen youth to add to society’s statics of a black male. We have to take responsibility for our on actions. Wasn’t the jury who made the decision mostly minorities

The whole story is not heard here but it is clear the kid was shot in the back of the head; hardly presenting a threat. Typically cops initiate conflict. Empowered by the badge, a gun, and the protection of the “blue shield” we have uniformed thugs acting as executioners. The kid may have had a criminal history. No where in the constitution in it allowed to carry out an on-the-spot execution.
This may or may not be about race but it is more likely to happen to a minority because “they look criminal.”

I was wondering why people were commenting on this case again. Apparently, on 7/9/2010, it was reported that the city tried to give the family $750,000. The proposed settlement was leaked and on 7/29/2010, the city was forced to reject it.
