Time to Retire Kay Bailey Hutchison

Kay Bailey Hutchison: Waving goodbye to her political career

Kay Bailey Hutchison: Waving goodbye to her political career

From the Austin American-Statesman: Kay Bailey Hutchison attacks Rick Perry for “Staying too Long.”

Which is kind of like the pot calling the kettle black:

“He’s a dedicated public servant,” Hutchinson will say in an announcement tour that starts this morning at La Marque High School. “I know he loves Texas. But now he’s trying to stay too long. Fourteen years. Maybe longer.”

Kay Bailey Hutchison has been a United States Senator since 1993. That’s 16 years if my math is correct.

Before that she was Texas State Treasurer from 1991 – 1993.

By my count, that’s 18 straight years of living off the tax payers’ dime after being elected by the people of Texas.

Add to those 18 years the 4 years that KBH served in the Texas House of Representatives (1972–1976), and her public career has spanned 22 years.

Rick Perry, on the other hand, has only been Governor since 2000 (8 years), and as Lieutenant Governor of Texas for one year prior to that. A total of 9 years of living on the tax payer’s dime.

Or less than half of the time KBH has served.

If anybody has outstayed their welcome, it’s KBH.

  4. I didn’t keep a running list of the votes and actions she took as Senator, but my mental scoreboard recalls many negative check marks. She seems to be infected with the same kind of D.C. sickness that McCain, and others, have.
I’m relieved she is out of D.C. and that I will not have to vote for again.

  6. One of the shock jocks on local radio station in San Antonio said that she until midnight last Monday night to step down without costing Texas taxpayers over $30M. Anyone know what that’s all about? Did she step down? if the story is true, doesn’t that show what and how she feels about us tax payers? Jay

  7. Does anyone know if she is pro unions? When I wrote her. The reply was just a form letter and never really gave her position on unions. Jay

  8. Monday was the last day in which KBH could resign her seat and the special election to fill the vacancy be held in conjunction with the Nov. 3 constitutional amendment election.

According to Secretary of State Hope Andrade, a special election to replace Hutchison could cost local taxpayers up to $30 million if she resigns after today. That cost will be borne by local taxing entities, including an expected run-off election.

Of course, the decision of when to hold the special election is left largely in the hands of the incumbent governor, Rick Perry, who Hutchison is challenging in the primary.

Even if, hypothetically, Hutchison was unopposed in the primary and general elections, a special election would still be needed before being sworn in as governor on January 2011, as her term does not expire until early in 2013 (the 2012 election cycle).
